"As. Vegetarian had very limited options. Restaurants in hotels need reservations and are often not available. Hot bath is excellent. Garden at rear and walk to Buddhist temple and shrine is great. "

"Wow - this place was amazing. I felt so spoiled coming back at the end of each day and soaking in the foot bath or onsen tub in our beautiful apartment. The kitchen and bathroom are also fantastic. There are not many restaurants near by, but we didn't mind bringing food with us to cook. There is also a 7-11 for supplies a 15-minute walk up the hill. We could easily catch the bus or train from here for our daily adventures. Our kids liked the foot bath and big projector screen for watching shows in the evening. "

"I had a great one night stay here. The staff are very welcoming and clearly enjoy working there and interacting with guests. The room is exactly as described, and it was very dark at night too. The walls are very thin and sound travels easily especially from the room below, so it’s better to think of it as a dorm rather than a completely separate room. I couldn’t join the Irori dinner as I arrived too late, but it was starting just as I was arriving, and it looked like a cosy experience connecting with other travellers. The hostel had a sociable, but relaxed, vibe. The kitchen was very well equipped too. The location was quite easy to get to, a bus ride from Hakone station and walkable from Gora station. I’d be happy to stay again if I’m back in Hakone. "

"Awesome experience and amazing foods no matter the dinner and the breakfast they never let you down. Staff will guide you through the hotel and the amenities. I got there late around 8:00-8:30pm but they still let us get the dinner. Highly recommend "

"Staying here is an extraordinary experience, stepping back in time to a ryokan as it was in the 1950s (and almost as it was in 1920). The hospitality is exceptional, the staff attentive and capable, and the room spacious and evocative of an earlier era. Visitors must realize that this means very little in modern conveniences: some rooms don’t have showers and all the rooms are Japanese style with tatami floors and futon beds (set out during dinner and removed during breakfast). There are many stairs, no elevator, and the outdoor shared baths are quite a walk through the (marvelous) garden. The meals are extravagant but totally Japanese. It is an experience not to be missed, but you need to know what you are getting. (The Imperial family apparently stayed here in 1955, the first time the Emperor had ever stayed outside the royal compound.) There many wonderful indoor and outdoor museums around the area, and several fantastic gardens. "

"The facility is very clean and has a relaxing atmosphere. The onsens were excellent and definitely a highlight of the stay. However, the kaiseki dinner was somewhat disappointing. The dishes lacked flavour, and many of them had a softer, mushy texture. The pacing of the meal could also be improved — there was about a 45-minute wait between courses, which felt quite long. In addition, there were occasional odours noticeable during food service that slightly detracted from the overall dining experience. The staff were courteous, but at times seemed less familiar with the details of the dishes, which made it difficult to fully appreciate the meal. Overall, while there were some positive aspects, the experience did not fully meet expectations for the price."
