Chamberlain Square

Chamberlain Square showing a square or plaza, heritage architecture and a city
A museum and art gallery, historical buildings, a food court and a Christmas market all make this public square a focal point of Birmingham’s city center.

Visit Chamberlain Square to take photographs of famous city landmarks, find work by world-renowned artists and browse a market at Christmas. The square in the heart of the city takes its name from Joseph Chamberlain, who was a British politician and the former Mayor of Birmingham.

Architecture enthusiasts will appreciate the buildings lining the square. Among these is the west elevation of the Council House. It is home to the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, which boasts the world’s most extensive collection of Pre-Raphaelite paintings. Look for the Big Brum clock tower, named for its similarity to London’s Big Ben, and the Town Hall with its grand Corinthian columns.

Be sure to check out the various statues dotted throughout the space. The Chamberlain Memorial, erected in 1880, stands in the center of the square, flanked by a small amphitheater. English architect J.H. Chamberlain designed the memorial, which honors Joseph Chamberlain. The two men were not related. You’ll also find a statue dedicated to James Watt, the inventor of the steam engine.

Come to the square during one of its cultural events, including a Christmas Craft Fair in December. This free market offers handicrafts and decorations from around the world. Listen to live music and take part in craft workshops during the annual Lord Mayor’s Show. Find full details of events on the official website of the Birmingham City Council.

Stop by the Paradise Forum food court for lunch. You’ll find a café, pub and bakery as well as a foreign exchange bureau. Alternatively, buy food to go and sit on the steps of the amphitheater.

Chamberlain Square is a short walk from major Birmingham attractions, including Symphony Hall, The Mailbox and Victoria Square. A pedestrian-only street runs west to Brindley Place and east to the Bullring Shopping Centre. New Street and Snow Hill train stations are a five-minute walk away.
