At the Museum of the Jewellery Quarter you can take a guided tour of a former jewelry factory and workshop, and also try your hand at jewelry making. When the Smith and Pepper manufacturing company closed in 1981 it left behind an insight into Birmingham’s jewelry-making history, an industry that still prospers. The museum opened in 1992 and has since won two awards for being the best small attraction in England.
Join a guided tour of the Smith and Pepper factory. Allow one to two hours for your visit. The tour is included with the admission fee. Admission is free for children under 16.
See the workbenches, tools and overalls used at the end of the 19th century and left abandoned after the factory’s closure. Discover 200 years of jewelry-making history at an interactive gallery, then watch live demonstrations by a trained jeweler. Visit the Earth’s Riches gallery and learn how to make jewelry from natural materials, such as whale tooth and diamond.
Find a selection of products from local craftsman at the museum shop. Admire art displays in the temporary exhibition area. Admission to the shop and temporary displays is free.
Listen to free jazz concerts in the building’s courtyard. The performances take place once a year as part of the Birmingham Jazz Festival. Throughout the year you can attend workshops during which you can try creating your own earrings and necklaces. Kids will enjoy specialized workshops designed for craft loving young folk. Check the museum’s official website for event times and prices.
Located in the Jewellery Quarter, the museum is a 20-minute walk from Birmingham’s city center. Pay-and-display parking is available nearby. Public transport, such as the train and bus, is a cheaper option.
The museum is open from Tuesday to Saturday, and on all public holidays that fall on a Monday. Visit the museum’s official website for full details.

8.2/10 Very Good! (1,005 reviews)
Check in staff unhelpful and took some debate to get a second keycard. The room had faulty and taped over bedside lights.
Dinning in was also terrible. Poor gentleman was in training and when he asked the manager for support who was sat next to him at check in. He was ignored. Manager was quite obviously on a personal call. They could neither offer our choice of meal or drink. Further to that the dinning room was freezing. The manger told us the warmest part to sit. Then mid meal turned the tv on to football at such a level without asking if we were okay ( bare in mind the radio was also
On at the same time)
The food was cold and below standard. Our table wasn’t clean.
We left our meal.
The nights stay was so noisy.
Very very disappointed as we stay at this chain 2-3 times a month.
Very very disappointing. Needs much improvement all round.

7.6/10 Good! (1,000 reviews)
Only one member of staff at reception on checking out. Who was also the only person available to take breakfast order. No tea coffee or breakfast choices laid out. Everything had to be ordered from behind the bar
Put me in another persons room after mixup with bookings
When relocated to another room had to divert yet to another room as the roof was leaking in the room they reallocated. Eventually got a tripple bedroom which I think as up and down to reception 3 times as key card would not open the door When I eventually got someone to unlock the door saying the battery was flat. That was me for the night locked in for the night with no TV as that wouldn’t work either.
The room was unprepared although bed was made but the room was not very clean
No cups, teas coffee or kettle to make a cuppa in the morning just two glasses and a small biscuit.
Could be a good place lacks management and staff of which in my stay I only saw 4 members the reception guy/breakfast waiter 3 bar staff who were all under stress. So no paid for breakfast and had search for Waiter even for a cup of tea
You can’t put a tab on the bar its pay as you go for drinks and snacks.
Faulty Towers not the poor staffs fault.
Same group as the hotel I stayed in the next night the Regency Solihul which is getting a lot of work done and a lot of maintenance A complete contrast.
Great attentive staff and plenty of them.
Perhaps the same standard will be sought for the Hockley as it has loads of potential.
