Dabble in water sports and discover deserted beaches, exclusive hotels and picture-perfect islands at this serene oceanfront resort.

The coastal resort of Punta Mita blends ecotourism and luxury. Set on the picturesque Banderas Bay, Punta Mita spreads across a peninsula where immaculate white-sand beaches sit in the shadow of jungle-clad hills. Play a round of golf, go wildlife-spotting, take trips to idyllic islands and try a range of water sports.

People have been living in Punta Mita since pre-Hispanic times. The region is considered a sacred place by the indigenous Huichol people, the descendants of the ancient Aztecs. Come here today and find a stylish resort that attracts Hollywood stars and well-known musicians with its natural, low-key charm.

Explore Punta de Mita, an atmospheric fishing village dotted with affordable accommodations, boutiques, cafés and restaurants. Running along the shores here is the family-friendly El Anclote Beach, a popular starting point for surfing, snorkeling and stand-up paddleboarding excursions. Embark on a boat trip to search for the humpback whales that frequent these waters between December and March.

From here, several miles of coastline wind around rocky bays and secluded coves. Visit private beach clubs such as the one at Porta Fortuna Beach. Look for celebrities hanging out in the bars and swimming pools of high-end hotels.

With warm turquoise water and large winter swells, surfing is a big year-round activity. Ride the rolling waves of The Point (El Faro), The Cove (La Bahia) and Veneros, among other breaks.

Don’t miss the Marieta Islands, a national marine park and designated UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Spot some of the 90-plus bird species and 100-plus varieties of fish that inhabit the islands. Swim through a water tunnel to reach the enchanting Hidden Beach.

Back on land, play a round of golf at the Pacifico Golf Course and the Bahia Golf Course. Both courses were designed by the legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus.

Punta Mita is located toward the south end of Riviera Nayarit, about an hour’s drive from Puerto Vallarta. Enjoy the comfort of the region’s well-appointed hotels.

I have been to all inclusive before but it has been awhile and at times we got bills from some dining to leave a gratuity. I just was not accustomed to this and wasn’t sure how much to leave.
