The Museum of the Island of Cozumel, or Museo de la Isla de Cozumel, is a small, but impressive introduction to the culture and history of Mexico’s largest Caribbean island. The museum is situated in downtown San Miguel, the island’s principal town. The collection also examines the island’s geography, geology, flora and fauna, and pays particular attention to surrounding coral reefs and marine life. This is a great first stop for scuba divers, history buffs and visitors alike.
It is thought that the Mayans first settled in Cozumel around A.D. 300. Examine the island’s pre-classical artifacts and take an interactive tour of Mayan history, traditional indigenous culture and contemporary arts. Learn how the devastating Spanish invasion of the Yucatan Peninsula in the 1500s decimated the indigenous populations, and how British and Dutch pirates later attacked Spanish settlements for their fabulous wealth. Then follow Cozumel’s transformation into an internationally renowned tourist and eco destination of today.
Allow an hour to explore the museum, which has signs in English and Spanish accompanying its displays. Afterwards enjoy a coffee and something to eat at the Café El Museo. This elegant venue on the second floor of the converted luxury hotel offers spectacular views of the Caribbean.
The Museum of the Island of Cozumel is within walking distance from the pier and the Plaza del Sol shopping district in downtown San Miguel. To get to Cozumel, take a ferry from Playa del Carmen. The museum is open daily and there is an entry fee. Guided tours are available.
