Take an exciting ride on Japan’s first wooden roller coaster and other traditional fairground rides at a theme park set in the foothills of Mount Tsurumi.

From thrilling rides to child-friendly attractions and live entertainment, there’s something for visitors of all ages at Kijima Kogen Park. Enjoy one of Japan’s most famous roller coasters, navigate your way through a spooky maze, go ice-skating and cool off at a splash pad. Kijima Kogen Park spreads across 62 acres (25 hectares) of a forested mountain slope, with glimpses of Mount Tsurumi in the background.

The chance to ride the 5,200-foot-long (1,600-meter) Jupiterroller coaster is a huge draw of the park. Opened in 1992, it is Japan’s first wooden roller coaster and among the longest of its kind in the world. Hold on as you reach speeds of about 56 miles per hour (90 kilometers per hour) while traveling around the twisting wooden tracks. Wait anxiously to fall from the 130-foot (40-meter) drop tower, crash at high speed into water on a log flume and experience multiple loops on a corkscrew.

For child-sized excitement, ride the Ferris wheel, merry-go-round, mini coaster and teacups and get spooked in a haunted maze. Step aboard a pirate ship and play a round of miniature golf. Cool down on a hot summer day in the fountains, jets and showers of the splash pad. Rent skates or sit on a sled and glide around the seasonal ice rink.

Live shows take place throughout the year and range from concerts to wrestling events. Have burgers, pizzas and typical Japanese meals at the park’s six restaurants. Purchase candy, pickles, sake and soju from the souvenir shops.

The park is about a 25-minute drive from downtown Beppu and parking is available for a fee. Alternatively, use the bus service operating between the park and both Beppu Station and Yufuin Station.

Kijima Kogen Park is open daily. There is an admission fee and individual rides have separate fees. Passes are available for unlimited access to all of the rides. Visit the park’s official website for more information.
