Actually I liked the property a lot. The room was clean and had a nice view of Beppu. The onsen was nice with a beautiful view from the open air bath. My reason for downgrading my score is they were very petty. When we went to the breakfast buffet the morning after check in, we were refused admission and pulled aside. This was very embarrassing making us look like criminals to the guests behind us in line. All because a mistake by the receptionist who checked us in undercharged my credit card by a few cents. I offered to pay the balance in cash (to avoid them paying a bank service charge) or charge my card for the extra amount. They wouldn't do that insisting on refunding the original amount to my credit card and charging my card again for the correct amount. They wanted my original credit card receipt but I left it in my room and didn't have the time to return to my room as I had a reserved train seat at 8 am. I said that I would return to settle the difference with them after I returned from that trip. That wasn't acceptable so they went ahead and processed the refund and recharged my card. At last we were allowed to enter the buffet. The refund took several days to show up on my credit card transactions. The refund ended up being LESS than what I was charged. Next the waitress refused to give me a small piece of fish like my wife got in her Japanese menu that wasn't in my western menu. She said we were only allowed one even though it was a buffet.
