"I was surprised to see a Ryokan listed. This type of “ hotel” usually charges by the person not the room and it’s expensive. I was so excited to get such a great deal but turns out it was not. The price seemed low at first for a room including breakfast but they hid the cost of the breakfast in the service charge, and extra fees. And then they tried to charge us again for the entire stay. We waited ten minutes for them to figure out we already paid. And finally they said we owed another $ 25...

"This was one of my favorite places on my Japan trip! This hotel is isolated so it may not be for everyone. You won't find Conbinis nearby, but my husband and I loved the isolation. The hotel is built right next to the river, so we booked a room with a private onsen inside and we had an amazing river view. "Hotel is a bit dated but the services were excellent. Maybe that's why the traditional standard can be upkeep. Dinner was great too. Onsen is authentic although not hot enough. We loved the hotel overall. The area is a bit quiet and not much to see but was a great getaway spot. "

"The lodge is run by a very friendly lady who was very accommodating. The rooms were very clean as well. Restrooms and showers are shared between rooms. There is also access to a communal microwave and refrigerator as well."

"Staying at Shima Onsen was a real delight. I would highlight the incredibly friendly and gracious staff, who made me feel very welcome and looked after as a solo traveller, and made the beautiful dining experience even better. I enjoyed walking through the lovely nearby streets and forests - it felt very secluded and tranquil. "Close to bus station. Close to stone steps. Older hotel but staff was very nice. Near steep hill, so I walked about 50 yards to ask staff at driveway if this was the hotel I was looking for. Then he ran up the hill to help us with our bags. I was very pleased."
