"This hotel is the perfect serene escape from the bustle of Kyoto city. The staff are incredible, all spoke English and were so helpful and really made us feel welcomed and cared for the whole time. The included drinks are delightful and we were able to sample the full tea selection as well as several alcoholic beverages even during our dinner- which I would also highly recommend booking!"

I cannot recommend this place enough! It was so relaxing, beautiful, and the staff was incredible! They offer traditional and local breakfast and dinner that rivaled Michelin star restaurants! It was our first Ryokan experience but definitely will not be our last now. Such an incredible place!

The staff is incredibly nice and friendly. If you call them in advance, they can pick you up at the Ohara bus station for no extra charge, as well as take you back to the bus station after your stay. The view of the surrounding mountains is beautiful. There is a small temple walking distance up the road, as well as hiking paths into the mountains. There are no convenient stores nearby, so if you don't choose the meal options at the hotel, you have to bring food. Rooms also don't have...

To start the staff is absolutely kind and hospitable. They really make you feel at home even if you’re 1000s of miles from it. Second, the actual hotel and scenery is out of a dream. An actual fairy tale! It made me fall in love with Japan even more. Third, everything was super clean and neat. And lastly, the complimentary items were just unbelievable! I will recommend anyone and everyone to this beautiful place. I will forever be grateful for everyone there!

This was a beautiful ryokan to stay. The staff are very helpful to english speaking visitors and can accommodate very well. This ryokan offers you to dine in an intimate setting so you're in a separate room with your guests/partner. Other ryokans have you sit in a restaurant style setting so you're in a large room with open tables. Our waitress and maid was super helpful and very caring for us while we stayed. Me and my friend stayed here one night and we were completely blown away by just about everything this place had to offer. The grounds are small and intimate but meticulously taken care of. You feel like you stepped into a different time or even a movie set. We saw two wedding parties here; one when we were checking in and one in the evening but it didn't feel intrusive. Someone met us at the gate for check out (we were a little late :( if you book here you should try to come right at 4pm), she...

Amazing! The property offered a shuttle ride from the station. We were greeted with a cup of tea. We were also taken to our room and with assistance and given a thorough tour of the space and the services that the hotel provided. The property has a beautiful view of the lake. The room was spacious for our group. Highly recommend the meals offered for dinner and breakfast. The onsen was also clean and spacious.

Quick breakdown, I only had one week to book a hotel and I was looking for a true Japanese B&B.
Staff was amazing and very nice.
Location is 10 minutes (car ride) from JR station. When you get to the station, ask the person in the station to call for your hotel ride. DO NOT attempt to go up that hill with luggage. There is not a walkway. The transport to and from hotel is included in price.
Hotel grounds are large, you can tell that this place used to be very popular.

Amazing property! The staff were so kind. I lost my glasses off of the balcony and the next day staff searched to find them for me!
The onsen on the balcony was so wonderful! A very spacious room with nice amenities. Great view of lake Biwa. Would highly recommend!

It's a great location away from the busy life of the city. The lake is crystal clear and great to swim in though we did not see other swimmers. The rooms are small, yet suffice. I'll probably come back again.

The hotel was so clean and the staff was so friendly. The shuttle service and food was beyind excellent. Yumotokan onsen was so good for 600 yen value. The only downside was that the hotel room smelled like cigarettes even though it was supposed to be non smoking. But I guess this is true in any part of Japan. But this was totally made up with the onsen facilities and food and friendliness of the hotel staff.

My friend and I were hesitant to stay here, because it was off from the central Kyoto. BUT, coming here was a great choice we made. This is the ideal Ryokan. It is clean, has very peaceful and calm environment, and we had their in-room kaiseki dinner at a reasonable price. Totally worth it. We booked a room with a private bath, and that really made our stay there memorable. The room provided choices of Japanese robe, yukata to wear, along with ladies setting up our futons for us. This hotel is fabulous. The rooms are stylish and the location could not be better. It is right next to a subway station and an easy trip from Kyoto station. The breakfast is tasty with many choices. The rooms are a little on the small side for Americans...we are from New York City so pretty typical for NYC standards. Would 100% stay here again. Five star for food, design, location, and service.

I had a great stay at THE GATE Hotel in Kyoto! The property is modern, clean, and well-maintained. One of the highlights is definitely the top floor, where the reception and bar are located—it offers a stunning panoramic view of the city, especially at sunset. The location is super convenient, just a short walk from the train station and close to several local attractions, which made it easy to explore Kyoto. Overall, a comfortable and stylish place to stay. I’d definitely come back!
