Vieux Port

Eat fresh local produce, gaze across the city to the sea and learn about the local heritage in the historic heart of Marseille, one of France’s oldest harbours.

A few hours in Marseille’s Vieux Port precinct reveal the cultural and historic hub of the city: a lively promenade flanked by cafés, restaurants and centuries of Mediterranean history. Sandwiched between the old town and the grand Notre Dame de la Garde Basilica, Vieux Port is hard to miss and most visitors to Marseille will pass through the area often. Learn about the local history as you discover some of the city’s most popular attractions.

Begin your day with some freshly baked bread and a coffee on the promenade. Take a seat at one of the cafés on the northern side of the street to enjoy views of the Notre Dame de la Garde rising up from its southern outcrop.

Now that you’re ready to start exploring, spend some time visiting the structures that expose the port’s 2,600 years of history. See the forts that protect the port’s entrance, which have roots in the time of French Kings. Enter Fort St. Jean, a 12th-century building at the northern entrance to the port, to see the permanent exhibition space of the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations.

When hunger strikes again you’ll love the range of restaurants in Vieux Port. Pick up some fresh produce from the fish market to prepare a picnic lunch, or sit down at a restaurant for a plate of bouillabaisse, a provincial fish stew typical of the city. Afterwards, wander through the historic streets to window shop at local boutiques.

Vieux Port’s central location makes it the perfect place to start each day in Marseille. Catch the bus from the terminus to the south to reach all areas of the city, or board a boat to reach the natural attractions of the Calanques National Park. A short walk will bring you to the Canebiére, a colourful arcade lined with cultural attractions and the Marseille tourist office.

No matter how fancy your hotel room is, don't spend your break holed up in your room or lying by the pool. There are endless memorable experiences to be had!

Old Port of Marseille has a lot of fantastic activities for vacationers to do. Why not consider an Urban Electric Bike Tour of Marseille or a Colorbus Marseille Hop-On Hop-Off Sightseeing Tour?
