We stopped by Durham today as part of a University Open Day visit and took some time to also explore the town.

As well as the cathedral which commends a great spot over the river there is also the castle, botanical gardens as well as lots of old parts of the beautiful town to explore.

"Staff were welcoming and helpful. Room was suited to limited mobility, as you can park adjacent (motel style) and minimal steps, but shower is over bath, so not for all. Room was clean with basic amenities, comfortable beds, great views over fields with deer and pheasants. Breakfast was traditional and OK, but we brunched in town the following morning. Bar meals are classic pub grub, tasty and good value. Local buses stop frequently, just outside, which was great for getting in to Durham, about 10 mins to the bus station/shops/cathedral/old colleges. Would recommend for a budget stopover and will use again"

"Although the room was clean the bathroom bin had not been emptied. Check in was very smooth and easy, Alex was very welcoming and informative, sharing information for the local area as well as hotel. The spa pool area was good and easy to use. The only negative is you have to walk through reception and the bar area to get to it which is a little uncomfortable when wearing your dressing gown. Breakfast was very good. Location very good. I would recommend and I would stay again "
