Kent

England
Canterbury Cathedral which includes a church or cathedral, heritage architecture and a city
Known as the Garden of England, this scenic county is home to bucolic landscapes, majestic castles and historic estates.

Kent is an attractive and verdant county, with abundant country scenery and a scattering of grand mansions. Admire picturesque fields, orchards and hop gardens, and explore historic battle sites, majestic castles and cathedrals.

Spend some time at Hever Castle and Gardens, one of the principal tourist attractions in the county. The 13th-century structure was the childhood home of the notorious Tudor queen, Anne Boleyn. Wander through its stunning gardens, which feature several mazes, teahouses and model houses, as well as a lake. Learn about the life of the Tudors and about Tudor architecture through the exhibits in the castle and find out if any jousting displays are taking place during your visit.

Another historic highlight in Kent is the city of Canterbury, home to the Canterbury Cathedral. One of England’s most popular tourist attractions, this Gothic cathedral is famous as the site where Archbishop Thomas Becket was murdered in the 12th century and for featuring in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. Venture inside to examine its interesting monuments and striking carvings.

Further south lies Dover, where you’ll find gleaming white coastal cliffs. Walk along the cliffs and enjoy panoramic views of the English Channel. On a clear day, you can even see as far as the French coast. Stop by nearby Dover Castle and learn about the historic structure’s role in defending the British coast for centuries. The castle is also home to secret wartime tunnels, from where Operation Dynamo, an important World War II evacuation mission, was planned and coordinated.

After learning about Kent’s fascinating history, treat yourself to a day of shopping at Bluewater Shopping Center. This award-winning complex has more than 300 stores, as well as a cinema and a mini-golf course. See the Turner Contemporary in Margate to learn about art from the 18th century through to modern day.

The area is among the warmest in the United Kingdom, although it is cold in winter. Kent is located southeast of London and is easy to reach by public transport. Use trains to travel to Kent from London and other U.K. destinations.
