Fought over three days in 1863, the battle of Gettysburg was a significant turning point during the Civil War. Today, visitors to Gettysburg can tour the battlefields, explore museums and watch live theater performances, of the event.

Begin at the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center, just south of the historic downtown area. While you are here, don’t miss the fully restored Cyclorama Painting. This 360-degree cylindrical painting of the battle was originally created in the late 1880s. Head to the American Civil War Museum where you can take a self-guided tour to learn more about the Civil War era and the Battle of Gettysburg. Discover the causes, effects and some of the most important figures that shaped American history through life-sized re-creations and dioramas.

If you need a break from the battlefield, head to downtown Lincoln Square to browse fine art or shop for frontier, Native American and colonial works. Enjoy live performances at the Gettysburg Majestic Theater or watch a variety of movies including film festival prize winners, documentaries and American independent films.

For dinner, wander along the downtown streets to find a number of eateries that feature live music and Irish fare. Or, book a table at the Dobbin House Tavern. This is the oldest building in town and overlooks the spot Abraham Lincoln gave his Gettysburg address. It now operates as an authentic 1776 tavern.

For something more modern, make your way to Seminary Ridge near General Robert E. Lee’s headquarters to sip a fine microbrew paired with upscale pub food.
