Berlin

Take a trip through two centuries of history when you explore this cozy Eastern Maryland town, where eclectic architectural styles decorate the streets.

Berlin is a town in Worcester County with a remarkably well-preserved Victorian town center. Part of Maryland’s Eastern Shore region, Berlin has long been a popular stopover for travelers headed east to coastal resorts. There’s plenty to discover for visitors who choose to stay longer, however. Investigate a wide range of destinations listed on the National Register of Historic Places or explore Berlin’s museums and trace the town’s history back to its Pocomoke and Assateague Indian heritage.

A great starting point is Main Street BerlinOpens in a new window. This revitalized historic district combines superb Victorian-era architecture with exciting shops, galleries, cafés and bars. Stroll around the preserved town center and explore antique stores, artisans’ workshops, local art galleries and boutique shops. Visit the Welcome Center and find out what’s happening during your stay. Attend an open-air concert, outdoor movie screening or a festival in the dynamic town center. Grab a beer at the Burley Oak Brewing Company or check out one of the town’s wine bars.

Learn about the town’s history by visiting the Calvin B. Taylor House MuseumOpens in a new window. This beautifully restored 1830s homestead contains displays telling the story of 19th-century Berlin and its residents.

To learn about historic architecture and American heritage, visit some of the town’s preserved houses. See the Federal-style brick house called Burley Manor or the exquisitely Italianate Merry Sherwood. Berlin’s 18th-century treasures include Fassitt House, Henry’s Grove and Genesar. Nearly 50 town structures are on the National Register of Historic Places. Pick up a map for a self-guided walking tour.

Berlin is less than a 20-minute drive from Ocean City on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Use the regional airports in Salisbury or Ocean City or drive from Baltimore in about 2.5 hours. Stay in boutique accommodations in historic homesteads or find a room in a modern hotel in the Eastern Shore region. Berlin’s dynamic town center and historic sites make it a destination for all seasons.
