Cambridge

Tour one of the oldest communities in Maryland, a historic waterfront city with a rich colonial heritage and maritime traditions.

Cambridge is a city in Dorchester County, Maryland. Its popular port was founded in the 17th century, making it one of the oldest in the state. Stroll on a brick-paved street through the picturesque historic district and discover parks, museums, art galleries and beautiful waterfront spots.

The city is known for its charming maritime atmosphere. Pick one of the many cafés along the Choptank River and have a relaxing meal while enjoying scenic riverside views. Walk along Long Wharf Park running beside the river and find the Choptank River Lighthouse, a fantastic replica of the original lighthouse that once guided the ships along the river. This famous site in Cambridge houses a small museum and the marina dockmaster’s office. If you want to see local wildlife, visit the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. Enjoy a fun and educational day for the whole family, get close to the animals and explore different land and paddling trails.

The historic center of Cambridge is a great area to discover. Walk along High Street and Race Street to find lovely art galleries, restaurants and shops. Stop at Christ Episcopal Church and Cemetery to see a beautiful historic building. Great Choptank Parish was one of 30 parishes of the Church of England established in 1692 in the colony of Maryland. Christ Church was established in Cambridge as the principal church of that parish. Take great photos of this Gothic Revival stone structure, designed by the renowned architect Charles Emmett Cassell.

While you are visiting the church, be sure to see the adjacent old cemetery. Look for the two stones located near the High Street entrance of the cemetery with inscriptions from the years 1678 and 1684, which demonstrate that the place has been a burial ground for more than 300 years.

Find the city of Cambridge on Maryland's Eastern Shore, an easy drive from many metropolitan areas including Baltimore, Washington D.C., Philadelphia and Richmond.
