Sadie Seymour founded Kona’s Outdoor Circle, a not-for-profit organization that aimed to “keep Hawaii clean, green and beautiful” in 1948. The compact botanical gardens were established within the grounds of the Outdoor Circle in 1986 when landscape architect Scott Seymour designed and established them in honor of his mother. Today you can explore 11 geographically arranged tiers of species, and visit an important Hawaiian archaeological site.
The Sadie Seymour Botanical Garden features an array of tropical species of trees, flowers and plants that are common to the area. Walk through the tiered garden as you discover the origins of some of the island’s most well known plants. See the native plants of the South Pacific, including Australia’s eucalyptus and the ixora, a common flowering plant of tropical Asia.
Navigate your way through the gardens with the help of the self-guide brochure, available at the gardens. The addition of illustrated signs makes a day at the 1.5-acre (6,000-square-meter) gardens both an educational and relaxing experience. Bring a picnic lunch and relax in the shady gardens to escape the sun. There is no food or drink available to buy on the grounds.
Visit Kealakowa’a Heiau, an ancient ritual site of great importance to the local Hawaiians. See where traditional canoes were constructed for traveling between the islands and the ceremonial platform where the canoes were blessed. The Outdoor Circle has an educational center where you can learn about the history of the region while exploring the lush plant life.
The Sadie Seymour Botanical Garden is located within the grounds of Kona’s Outdoor Circle, 3 miles (4.8 kilometers) outside of Kailua-Kona. The gardens are best reached by car, and free parking is available. There is no public transportation to the gardens however, taxis are available from Kailua-Kona.
The garden is open daily and admission is free however, a donation is suggested.

9/10 Wonderful! (94 reviews)
Our stay at Gingerhill Farm in Hawaii was a truly unique experience and the perfect retreat. If you're looking for something comfortable and memorable outside of the traditional resort stay, this is it.
The outdoor shower and open-air kitchen were absolute highlights—they made us feel immersed in the beautiful surroundings while still having everything we needed. The property is filled with lush gardens, blooming ginger, and vibrant tropical plants that create a peaceful, relaxing atmosphere. We also loved spotting the friendly geckos throughout the property, which added to the authentic island experience.
A wonderful bonus was discovering the beautiful artwork by Mayumi Oda displayed throughout the property. Her vibrant, nature-inspired prints complemented the peaceful setting perfectly and added another layer of inspiration to our stay.
If you appreciate nature, tranquility, and a one-of-a-kind place to stay, Gingerhill Farm is a wonderful choice!

7/10 Good! (383 reviews)
I was unaware that this property was made up of individual condos rented out. The location was great, but getting help for issues with the room wasn't easy as the owners of my unit weren't on site. The first phone number I was given didn't work but I was finally able to resolve some issues with the owner. There was no ice machine on site and it had the tiniest kitchen I've ever seen. That being said, the location was great, we have a beautiful lanai overlooking the beach and that was great. The pool area was nice and the grounds were lush. We were able to arrange a later check out to accommodate morning snorkeling and that was appreciated. All in all, the stay was a good one, but there were areas that good be improved with better communication.

9/10 Wonderful! (1,001 reviews)
The cleaners had the condo immaculate. All appliances, counters, floors, bathrooms, etc were spotless. Sofa and chairs looked new… no stains or wear.
The staff at check-in were very helpful! They had great suggestions for beaches and sea turtle viewing. Staff were non-intrusive, yet always available for questions as they worked to maintain the property.
Pools and hot tubs were well maintained, warm, and appealed to multigenerational vacationers. I hope to return in the future!
