Whether you want fine art, shopping, shaded walks, skating or a cemetery tour, fill your days in this diverse neighborhood.

Mériadeck is a relatively new district created as a planned site in the late 20th century just west of the city center of Bordeaux. Find a lot of attractions and services within this compact neighborhood.

Near the center of Mériadeck is Centre Commercial Mériadeck, a three-story shopping and dining spot with a stunning glass façade. Walk here or arrive by tram to visit gourmet food shops, fashion and home stores and numerous eating spots. The Auchan hypermarket is open till late evening for groceries and essentials. Pop in for lunch, souvenirs or complimentary WiFi. If you’re traveling with young children, use the free family services, including a nursery, play area, stroller loans and Saturday afternoon kids’ puppet show.

Just east of the shopping center, stop in the Gallery of Fine Arts, which hosts temporary exhibitions. Permanent exhibits are at Bordeaux’s Museum of Fine Arts, a short walk southeast.

Directly south of the commercial center are the green areas of Park Jardin Mériadeck and Esplanade Charles de Gaulle. Come here to stroll in the shade of leafy trees or relax with a book on a quiet bench.

Get some exercise at Patinoire Mériadeck (Mériadeck Skating Rink) which has open skating and hockey events. The site operates from mid September to mid May. Bring the family to enjoy the nearby bowling alley or step inside the Mériadeck Library.

West of central Mériadeck is the large Chartreuse Cemetery, centuries older than much of the modern district. Wander through this peaceful site and look for graves from the late 1700s onward. Find the headstone of the famed Spanish realist Francisco de Goya, one of the best-known Spanish Old Masters painters. He lived in Bordeaux for 4 years and was buried here after his 1828 death.

Reach Mériadeck by traveling west from the Centre-Ville of Bordeaux. Walk here in just a few minutes or ride the tram.

The Place de la Bourse (Place Royale) faces onto the river Garonne. It was laid out in the 1700s by Louis XV's architect, Gabriel, to act as a dramatic frame for an equestrian statue of the monarch. The Place de la Bourse is framed on one side by the Stock Exchange (the 'Bourse' that gives the square its name) and on the other side by a museum. During the French Revolution the bronze statue of Louis XV on horseback was dismantled and smelted down in 1792 and replaced by a “tree of liberty”. This was “uprooted” in 1828 during the French Restoration period under Charles X and replaced by a modest column shaped fountain. The present fountain by Louis Visconti was erected in 1869 and is known a the Three Graces
