Downtown Tucson

Historic architecture and traditions are integrated seamlessly into the city’s hip, cosmopolitan urban center, which is connected to other Tucson areas by a streetcar route.

In the heart of the city, Downtown Tucson draws together historic precincts, university districts and the city’s lone streetcar route. Alongside the Presidio and Congress Street historic districts, Downtown Tucson is where you’ll find the city’s best shopping, some of the state’s most important cultural institutions and international cuisine in fashionable locations. Join local residents reveling in the bars around the University of Tucson or stop at the farmers market to sample Arizona’s finest produce.

Start your visit to the city by exploring the El Presidio Historic District to understand the city’s foundations. As one of the earliest settlements in the United States, the precinct is of great historic value. See restored homes and traditional iron street lamps as you explore the region on foot. Board a horse-drawn carriage for a guided tour of the area. See the Tucson Museum of ArtOpens in a new window and capture photographs of the façade of the Old County Courthouse. Stop for a meal at El Charro Café, one of the oldest Mexican restaurants in the country.

Walk to Congress Street to see where Tucson’s old city and modern culture combine. Eat at fashionable restaurants, shop for records and vintage clothes at independent boutiques or peruse local art at its many galleries. The historic Hotel Congress dates back to 1919 and was once the hideout of John Dillinger, the famous outlaw.

Visit on the second weekend of the month to experience 2nd Saturdays Downtown, a celebration of the city’s culture and cuisine. Throughout the streets, galleries and restaurants of the city Tucson locals present art, music and food. Check the official website for schedules or pick up pamphlets from stores around the city.

Downtown Tucson is a hub for the city’s hotels. Select from a range of accommodations. Get around the area using the Sun Link Tucson Streetcar, which cuts through Downtown Tucson, passing many of its major attractions. Taxis and buses also serve the region, while some parking is available for a fee.

Overall, I was very happy with my stay. The hotel is well-kept. We ate at the restaurant. I had the airline chicken and my son had the risotto. Both dishes were good but extremely salty. The dishes had nice flavor, so not sure why the chef relies on salt so much. The room was nice—some road noise ...
