Explore the shady paths of large green spaces, play in an interactive math museum or select fresh produce at local markets in this Florentine quarter.

Step off the tourist path and into the lively district of L’Isolotto to experience true Florence living. West of central Florence, L’Isolotto is family friendly, with plenty of activities including large parks, a theater, a museum for mathematics and a cinema complex.

Bring the kids to Villa Vogel Park, with a large lawn area, duck pond and plenty of shade. Use the bike paths, soccer fields and rides, including a trampoline and merry-go-round. Children’s events are held here throughout the year. Giardino di Villa Strozzi is another large green space with a concert venue, Limonaia. Follow the winding path up the hill for fantastic views of the city and countryside.

Check the online schedule for Teatro Cantiere Florida, a nearby theater hosting dance, theatrical plays and other productions. For movies, go to the large UCI Cinemas, with some films shown in English. Next to the cinema is a bowling alley, perfect for a family day out.

The Giardino Di Archimede or Garden of Archimedes is an interactive mathematics museum aimed at slightly older children and adults. Learn about the geometry of curves, Galilean instruments and Pythagoras and his theorem, while solving puzzles along the way.

When you’re hungry, browse the local markets in Piazza dell’Isolotto for irresistible fresh fruit and vegetables. It is open daily except Sunday. The market’s location away from the tourist center means that it is truly authentic. For more than a light snack, L’Isolotto has many restaurant and café options, and of course, gelaterias and pasticcerias.

Most of the attractions in L’isolotto are located just 20 to 30 minutes away from central Florence by the regular bus service. Walk to Giardino di Villa Strozzi and Teatro Cantiere for some exercise.

If you’re spending a bit longer in Florence and want to explore the city further or simply want to get away from typical tourist spots, head to L’Isolotto for authentic Florentine living.
