Property and rooms very dated (70’s Japan) but staff, breakfast and location excellent to reach out in to the mountains to hike or visit the three great temples in Bessho. For £100 a night we visited after our Kanazawa trip, early check in and reasonable check out time with breakfast allows one to really relax, even if for a day."

"The outdoor private onsen is amazing. Staff with limited English but willing to help. The booking system for the private onsen is based on first come first serve, no reservation ahead so you have to keep calling front desk to check for availability....that needs to be changed. Other than that, I'd recommend it to those who enjoy traditional Japanese Ryokan."

"別所温泉は長野県で最も古い温泉で、上田駅からローカル線で約30分のところにあります。規模は大きくないだけに静かで落ち着いた雰囲気のところです。中松屋旅館は300年の歴史を誇る老舗旅館で、温泉街の中心に位置しています。大きな旅館ではありませんが、雰囲気はとてもよく、落ち着いてゆっくりと過ごせます。料理も工夫を凝らしており、おいしくいただきました。温泉は源泉かけ流しで時間を気にせずいつでも入浴できます。館内は部屋を含めて畳み敷で、スリッパを使わずに館内を移動するようになっていたのもアット・ホームな感じでくつろげました。都会の喧騒を離れて、静かなところでくつろぎたい人にはうってつけの温泉旅館かと思います。なお、北向観音は旅館から徒歩1分ほどのところでここもおすすめです。"
