Swiss Transportation Museum Tours

Trains, planes and automobilescome to life through interactive exhibits in a vast collection at Lucerne’s transportationmuseum.

Since 1959, the Swiss Museum of Transport (also called Verkehrshaus der Schweiz) has been afocal point of Lucerne. The museum takes you on a trip through time, where youcan explore the past and future of our world’s transportation methods.

Over 3,000 items are housed in the museum complex. Stroll through theRail Transport Hall, where you can admire trains from throughout time and walkthrough a model of the famous Gotthard Tunnel. Watch crash tests in the RoadTransport Hall and admire Neolithic canoes and warfare steamboats in theNavigation Hall. The Aviation and Space Travel Hall is famous for its extensivecollection of planes and offers a close look at everything from wood flyers to jets.Don’t miss out on the EURECA Research Satellite.

Take a look at starry skies and learn about astronomy breakthroughs atthe planetarium and enjoy 3-D films about our planet at the IMAX Theater. Checkthe museum’s website to see which films and presentations are in each arena. Themuseum typically offers shows that will appeal to all ages. 

When you’re done exploring transportation of old and new, head over tothe Hans Erni Museum to immerse yourself in local art. Children will love thepainting station and visitors of all ages will enjoy an afternoon break in thesculpture garden.

While strolling through the museum, set aside a few minutes to enjoySwissarena. This 1 to 20,000 scale aerial photograph captures Switzerland’scomplex topography in incredible detail. Visitors get to “walk acrossSwitzerland” as they look at the country from a completely unique perspective. 

Delve a little deeper with the museum’s wide offering of guided tours, featuringan inside look at each exhibit. Visit “Life on the Swiss Railway,” whereconductors share tales of their experiences. Each tour is offered in English orGerman and lasts about an hour. 

Located on the lakeside in northern Lucerne, the Swiss Museum ofTransport can be reached on the S-Bahn. Alternatively, it is a 30-minute walkfrom the city center.
