Giant games, fun activities, restaurants and shops fill this lively pedestrian piazza at the core of the city.

Market Square is the epicenter of life and culture in Pittsburgh, with all types of artistic performances and events. Dating back to the 1700s, this plaza saw the founding of the city’s first newspaper, courthouse and jail. Visit Pittsburgh’s Market Square to get a sense of the culture and tradition in the Steel City.

Make your way around the edges of the square, stopping to have something to eat at one of the many restaurants. Dining options range from upscale restaurants to fast-food outlets.

Browse the various shops and take a break with a hot beverage from one of the cafés. Play giant chess, checkers or Jenga with your friends or join yoga, kids’ activities and dancing routines.

Arrive on Thursdays in summer for the Market Square Farmers Market. Here, you can purchase all types of goods, from flowers and herbs to fresh fruit and breads. Peruse more than 30 stalls for their artisanal crafts and food. The market becomes quite lively with free afternoon concerts.

Many events take place in Market Square, from peaceful marches and political rallies to musical concerts and other artistic recitals. During the festive season, the square turns into a Christmas market with Santa, gingerbread houses and an ice rink.

Note that the site was originally known as Diamond Square and was established in 1764. It was given a major restoration to its current design, with a greater emphasis on pedestrians, in 2009.

Market Square is in the center of Downtown Pittsburgh. Travel by metro to Gateway Station and walk southeast for a couple blocks to arrive at the plaza.

While in this part of the city, check out the surrounding highlights, including Gateway Center Park, the Tower at PNC Plaza and Heinz Hall for the Performing Arts.
