Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts

Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts
If you live and breathe art, don’t miss this modern art space in a former warehouse in the heart of one of Brisbane’s most energetic and creative districts.

“The Judy,” as the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts is known to the locals, is a space where Queensland’s best modern artists are presented to the world. See a show, browse the gallery and attend an art class or workshop during your stay in the Queensland capital.

Situated in an old, brick warehouse, the exhibits of the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts couldn’t be more contrasting with its humble exterior. Facilities include the 300-seat Performance Space, the Theatre Rehearsal Space, a modern art gallery, artist studios, and workshops. The Shopfront is an intimate venue for performances, presentations and exhibitions.

Some of Queensland’s most renowned arts companies present their talents in The Judy, from Aboriginal artists to circus performers. The exhibits and events are an exciting mix of cabaret, music, dance, circus and contemporary performance, so just see what is on during your stay in Brisbane.

After a show, have drinks or snacks in the Foyer Bar. The Judy also hosts Arthouse Coffeeby day and the Slingshot Bar Gallery by night. Sample South East Asian street food from the center’s Rogue Spice Canteen + Bar for lunch or dinner.

Don’t miss the displays of the Institute of Modern Art (IMA) on the next floor. Admire new works by local and international artists in the gallery or see a performance in the courtyard.

The Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts is in Brunswick Street. Entry to the general spaces and Institute of Modern Art is free. Get your show tickets from the Judith Wright Centre’s Box Office just before a show or book through its website. If you book online, you receive a discount for Secure-A-Spot Parking justaround the corner in Berwick Street. As this is the heart of the lively Fortitude Valley, metered street parking spots are costly and fill fast. It’s much cheaper to purchase a local transport “go card” and take the train to the nearby Fortitude Valley train station, hop on a bus that takes you right to the front door of the museum or walk from the city center.
