GrotonUnited States of America

Friendliness and a warm welcome are guaranteed in this laid-back town famed for its revolutionary history and location between two rivers.

Historic Groton sits between the two estuaries of Mystic River and the Thames River, giving the town an island-like atmosphere. Visit to enjoy nationally famous historical sights, tranquil coastal retreats and scenic park spaces.

Picture yourself as Adrian Block, the Dutch explorer who mapped the coastline here as early as 1614. Travel back to an era of revolutionary battles at Fort Griswold Battlefield State Park. In 1781, British forces landed here and fought the biggest battle ever to take place in Connecticut. Wander around the remains of an American fort and visit the Ebenezer Avery House, where wounded soldiers were sheltered.

Hop between Groton’s other important landmarks. The Submarine Force Library & Museum lets visitors board the first nuclear-powered submarine and learn about Connecticut’s boatbuilding industry. Wander through the halls of Avery-Copp House, a colonial-style timber home built in the early 1800s.

Relax along the coast of Connecticut. Esker Point Beach is a peaceful, sandy spot with safe swimming and quiet picnic spots, as well as open-air summer concerts. Take your family to the lifeguard-patrolled Eastern Point Beach at the mouth of the Thames River.

Enjoy outdoor adventures at destinations such as Haley Farm State Park, which is covered in biking and hiking trails. Pets are welcome in the Copp Family Park, which features forests and wetlands for scenic walks.

Explore the old-world village of Noank, in the southeastern part of the town. Here, the Sylvan Street Museum traces the maritime history of this community while the Noank Village Boatyard is one of the state’s most picturesque harbors.

Experience the local character at its strongest on Groton City Day. This spirited event takes place on the first Friday in August, when town officials and politicians cook for the local community while fun events are put on for families.

Fly into Tweed New Haven Airport and drive for an hour to reach Groton. Come in fall to enjoy the parks in the area featuring colorful seasonal foliage.

We traveled to Mystic to visit the bakery Sift. My wife really wanted to go after seeing the owner on the show Spring Baking Championship!
