River View Retreat-Elk Creek, Driftless Region

Get away from it all (note: there is no WiFi—try it and you might like it) at this cozy 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom Amish-built log cabin tucked away above the Kickapoo River in the Driftless Area of Southwestern Wisconsin.

The cabin is conveniently located off state highway 131, with Elk Creek- a Class-A trout stream- just minutes away. Mowed trails alongside the creek offer easy access for fishing or a relaxing nature walk.

The River View Retreat boasts a near-hemispheric view of the river, valley and hills that make the Driftless so unique, including a dramatic 180-degree bend in the river.

Take a walk on the maintained grass trails on property, or for the more adventurous head up the hillside to walk one of the many deer trails carved out over years.

Relax and dine in the screened-in rear porch while enjoying the magnificent views and bird watching. Other amenities include a covered front porch, a stocked fire pit in the backyard, a gas grill and satellite TV. Large skylights in each bedroom impress with breathtaking views of the sky above and the river below.

Amazing Place to Unwind

Needed a place to unplug and relax, and this cabin was perfect! So clean and well-cared for, the property had everything I needed and no clutter to distract from the experience. Easy drive to Cashton for Amish shopping, and just down the road from great hiking at the Kickapoo Valley Reserve. I could have stayed on that screen porch for a few more days!

Great little cabin!

We loved our time here! Love sitting outside in the morning and evening listening to all the birds. Loved sitting around the campfire at night (wood, lighters, and smores sticks were all provided...so convenient!). Loved walking the short mowed trails in the trees on the property. So relaxing! Enough activities nearby to enjoy (canoeing was our favorite) but also a great place to just relax. The cabin was stocked with all the little things (trashbags, paper towels, salt, etc), which is a small thing but so nice to not have to buy all those little essential items. Chad was quick to answer questions via text, like where the closest grocery store is or if there is horseriding in the area. Just fyi, make sure you note that there is no washer and dryer in the cabin, but there is a laundry mat very close. We would still chose to stay there again, just something to make sure you plan for. Overall we had a great stay and would recommend to anyone looking for a relaxing spot to spend a few days.

Four of us stayed at the cabin for three days to hike and kayak the area. The cabin was well-stocked, comfortable, and the perfect size for the adult getaway. We especially enjoyed the screened in porch - a beautiful view of the rolling hills. We had meals and watched the sunset from the porch. The cabin was clean, well equipped with cooking items, and useful materials were provided to look at about the area. The host communicated quickly and was easy to work with. We wanted to stay longer and will definitely come back often.

Peace and Quiet

We had a wonderful time relaxing at the cabin and enjoying the driftless area. The back screened in porch was a great place to hang out, eat, and watch a wide-range of birds at the feeders.

The cabin was amazing and relaxing! It had many extras and was very clean and neat! The owners have thought of everything, down to the filled bird feeders and mowed path! Fire pit was great with split wood provided! The screened in porch was excellent Rate a 10 on 0-10 scale!!!

Perfect Driftless getaway

The River View Retreat cabin was the perfect getaway! A beautiful, secluded setting even though you are close to main roads to get where ever you want to go. Opportunities for hiking, fishing, touring, As well as visiting shops and orchards abound within a short distance. Even though it was very chilly at night, we were cozy and warm in the cabin. The kitchen was supplied with everything you need, and the bed was very comfortable. Skylights let you check out the stars right from your bed! It was too cold to use the back porch, but if we come again in warmer weather we know we would spend lots of time there. Would highly recommend, we hope to return again!

Beautiful propery!

My husband and I spent a lovely anniversary weekend at the cabin. It had everything we needed to be comfortable. We spent the majority of the time on the front and back porches watching the birds. What an amazing set up! Chad was great with communication and check-in was a breeze. We're definitely planning on going back.

Great Post-Pandemic Vacation

I booked this cabin as our first post-pandemic vacation, and it exceeded all my hopes. It was immaculate and peaceful. There's quite a lot to do nearby (hiking, canoeing, exploring little towns) but it's also a great spot to chill and do nothing. The grill and fire pit were especially nice.

Much needed getaway

This cabin has everything you could need and more, including a beautiful view. We really enjoyed dinner and games in the screened in porch. Looked forward to seeing the Amish horse and buggy pass by in the evenings. Bird watching was also a favorite. Spent the week fishing, hiking, kayaking, rented an ATV, even spent a day at the Dells. All within about an hours drive. Thank you for sharing this beautiful place.

Biking Weekend

River View Retreat is a lovely cabin, and perfect for a weekend of biking in the Driftless area. The trails and the country roads were great rides. I enjoyed the cabin, the beautiful area and all the cycling options.

Great cabin, great location

Great location in Bluff country

Isolated on the side of a bluff, surrounded by wilderness, and overlooking the Kickapoo valley. Beautiful view and a surprising amount of birds you don't see every day. My dad is a bird watcher and really enjoyed that. Great base camp to access dozens of trout streams.

Beautiful getaway

My husband and I had an amazing time in this cute little cabin! The views are amazing and it’s situated right above an amazing trout stream that was super fun to fish. This was our second time visiting and we’ll definitely be back!

Relaxing Stay

My family really enjoyed our stay as a nice relaxing getaway from our daily lives. The cabin was very clean and supplied with all of the essentials. We enjoyed bird watching during the day with camp fires at night. Plenty of cut firewood was supplied. It is a half an hour drive from Wild Cat state park which has nice hiking trails and some great canoeing on the Kickapoo river. Chad was helpful leaving instructions and available for any questions.

Perfect getaway spot for couples or family.

This cabin was a great getaway for my wife and I. The cabin has everything one would need for a week stay. Chad was very easy to work with and contact if anything was needed. Centrally located for many activities- apple.picking in Gays Mills, small town in Viroqua and great places to hike and enjoy the outdoors! We truly our stay from 10/14/19 through 10/19/19!

Family vacation

We had a very lovely time and the cabin really had everything we could need! The location is absolutely stunning and the view is one of a kind! The fishing access is quite literally right below the cabin and the only downfall we had was being totally overrun by ladybugs and yellow jackets inside the cabin. Such is Fall in the Midwest though with those warm sunny days. Looking forward to inviting family to join us back in the future.
