"We stayed at Oohira hotel in October to use it as a base for hiking. It is perfectly located, near the top end of Zao Onsen, right next to the base of the mountain and the big Zao outdoor onsen. We found it with no issues, and the hotel will pick you up from the bus station if you call in advance. The main thing to stand out for us at Oohira was the staff, who were really excellent throughout. They even spoke some English which was surprising and welcome! The hotel building itself is a little...

Top Zao Hot Springs Ski Resort Hotel Reviews

Daiwa Roynet Hotel Yamagata-ekimae

10/10 Excellent

"I really loved this hotel. It was very clean, the room was fairly spacious, and there were lots of nice amenities."

Omiya Ryokan

10/10 Excellent

"Classic Japanese interior with tatami flooring but more modern bedding. Walls are thin so be careful not to be too loud and disturb the others. I could hear the conversation of others when they walked by my door and in their rooms when I walked by theirs. Onsen was nice and has a small covered outdoor section. I went inbetween the peak seasons and you can see the the town itself asleep, so many shops were closed. I speak Japanese but the staff were quick to double check if I needed things to be explained in English. I wouldn't bring a big loud group here. I do recommend for a classic quiet, slow, relaxed, Japanese ryokan."

Kaminoyama Azumaya

8/10 Good

"The room was just like any business hotel room. It was clean but definitely dated in some places. Breakfast buffet was great. Free refreshments. Onsen was great. I added breakfast by paying extra when i made this reservation, but at the check in, I was told that it's not included. In the end all was fine."

Super Hotel Yamagataeki Nishiguchi Natural Hot Springs

Hayamakan

10/10 Excellent

"Staying here was a great experience. Relaxing in our private onsen while looking out at the mountain and city was stunning. Our other favorite part was the dinner - our server was so amazing with us and compliments to the chef for preparing the delicious food. As foreigners, it was our first time trying some of these foods, and we enjoyed most of it. Thank you!"

Yamagata Nanokamachi Washington Hotel
