This secluded beach is among the most beautiful on the Izu Peninsula and is perfect for swimming, morning walks and for viewing Mount Fuji.
Toi Beach sits on the western coast of the Izu Peninsula, a secluded region renowned for quiet villages, lavish onsens (hot springs) and dramatic coastlines. The small, former gold-mining town of Toi is home to the largest swimming area on the coast and in summer attracts many visitors for its summer festival. Since Japan’s extensive rail system doesn’t service the west coast on the peninsula, Toi Beach is a fantastic place to escape the crowds and enjoy some peace and quiet. Swim in the calm, shallow water, enjoy a long walk along the soft sand or simply admire the impressive views of Mount Fuji on the other side of Surunga Bay.
Start your day with a walk along the immaculately clean shoreline to discover some of the unusual rock formations in the area. At the southern end of the beach you’ll find the Toi Port. Board a ferry to visit nearby towns or to take in the magnitude of Surunga Bay. From the beach you can see Mount Fuji, the tallest peak in Japan.
Lay out your towel and then head into the water for a relaxing swim. Lifeguards patrol the beach in summer and breakwaters mean the water remains calm year-round. Children will love the shallow water and the gentle waves that roll against the shore.
After a swim, walk along the foreshore to find restaurants serving local delicacies and convenience stores selling cold drinks. Try a bento box for a light snack and be sure to sample some local wasabi. The peninsula grows up to 80 percent of Japan’s wasabi. Toilets, free hot shower facilities and lockers are located just behind the beach.
Toi Beach is located in Toi, on the west coast of the Izu Peninsula. The town can be reached by bus or car and there is some pay-and-display parking along the foreshore. Those staying within the town can easily reach the beach on foot or by bicycle.
