In the spring, your senses will be delighted by an array of blooming trees and beautiful flowers, including Dogwoods. The fall brings a dazzling explosion of color during leaf change.
This is a quiet, restful spot beloved by those seeking quiet repose. It is great for deep meditation, or concentration on work, or other projects. Some of my past guests have studied for the Bar Exam and GRE, in the weeks prior to the examinations.
Historical Data -- Originally, the B. Richard Jackson House, a/k/a the Carrier Weather Maker National Prize-winning House, the house was built in 1953 by Eduardo Catalano and his colleague, also from Argentina, Horacio Caminos (both of whom were in residence at the NCSU School of Design).
They applied for and received a $5000 prize from Carrier for this design in 1953. In fact, Caminos was able to bring his family from Europe as a result of the Carrier grant. This home was built to showcase and demonstrate the value and affordability of air conditioning in the moderate price range.
The magazine "Living For Young Homemakers" selected this home for its April 1954 issue. It was also featured in the Raleigh News and Observer on January 30, 1954.
The Architect: Eduardo Catalano formerly taught at the Architectural Association in London until 1951. It was then that he was recruited as a Professor of Architecture by Henry Kamphoefner for the NCSU School of Design and moved to Raleigh. Although their tenure at NCSU was short-lived Catalano built two houses in Raleigh. His residence has since been demolished due to the neglect of later owners. Mine remains a rare example of the MCM bungalow.
In 1996 Catalano and Caminos moved together to Boston and taught at MIT until his retirement in 1977.
Buildings designed by Catalano include the US embassies in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the Julliard School of Music at New York City's Lincoln Center, and the Stratton Student Center at MIT in Cambridge MA.

This property worked out very well. It was exactly as advertised and had everything we needed. The location was great also - close the highway, Whole Foods and a number of great walking trails.
We enjoyed our stay in Ellen's bungalow and will definitely stay there on future visits to Raleigh. Everything was as listed in her description with a fully stocked kitchen where I was able to cook a family dinner!
The house appeared as listed. It is located in a quiet neighborhood with plenty of room for a family to enjoy. Our family enjoyed our short stay there, and it is conveniently located to Durham and many local attractions in the Raleigh area.
We stayed at this location for a wedding in Raleigh. location was perfect. the property was clean. Owner was very helpful. Exactly what we were looking for.
Clean, cozy, and had everything we needed. Ellen was the best host!
The house was as described and very clean. We had everything we needed and the host Ellen, added touches that made our stay great. We traveled with our dog and she had supplies to make his stay great too. Check in and check out were a breeze and Ellen was available if we needed her. Would stay here again.
Owner bends over backwards to make your stay comfortable. Great communication. Location right in the heart of a quiet neighborhood near NC State and Meredith College. Would definitely recommend this home for those traveling with fur babies.
Nice 50's retro home on nice wooded property. Located near Ulmstead State park with excellent hiking. Not a bad drive to Duke to visit my daughter and close to Raleigh. Everything was as advertised. Ellen is a fine host.
We really loved this cute and quirky place, in a great way!!!! It had every amenity we needed, from appliances to fully-stocked kitchen. Tucked away in a absolutely beautiful quiet and safe neighborhood, but minutes from Whole Foods, Harris teeter, target, Costco and anything else you might need. We will definitely come right back here next time we are in Raleigh!
Ellen was a great host!
She communicated helpful details about check-in, which was super easy; and also about the history of the home. Our pup enjoyed being able to join us on this trip, and Ellen was very welcoming of him, as well!
Neighborhood was quiet, woodsy, and we were able to enjoy a quiet walk in the morning—
Thanks for a great stay in Raleigh!
We stayed here with our dog over a weekend when attending my son's graduation from NC State. The house had everything we needed and is located in a wonderful, quite neighborhood, yet was a short drive to everything, including the University and great restaurants. Ellen was very accommodating, even supplying us with pancake mix, eggs and bacon for breakfast. We will definitely be back!!
My boyfriend, mom, dad and I stayed here for NC State's Family Weekend and it was perfect! My parents got there before us and they said check in was very easy. The house had everything you could need and was very close to campus. Our favorite part was the outdoor patio and sitting out there and drinking coffee in the morning. Thank you so much Ellen!
I love the 1950’s architecture of this home. It has everything you would need to just relax (the patio is lovely). The location is super convenient to about all areas of Raleigh. It was uncanny that almost everything we mapped was just a 10 minute drive. Great neighborhood. Highly recommend
We refugeed while our house was renovated and painted. Ellen was an amazing host! The house is fun to stay, the neighborhood is beautiful. We found a nearby house with two redwoods! Very convienient to food and shopping. Thanks! Ellen!
This was an opportunity to experience a home designed by the internationally known architect, Eduardo Catalano. His innovative ideas were incorporated into this design, which was quite a departure from the typical dwelling of its time.
The house is a beautifully maintained mid century modern home in a great neighborhood. Except for the huge kitchen, you would think you were transported to the 1950s. Ellen was a great host.

Perfect location and great value
The bungalow was perfect for a short business trip - it was clean and stocked with everything that was needed. I was surprised to find a printer and hookups for an external keyboard & mouse, which was perfect for laptop users. It was under 15 minutes from RDU and Downtown Raleigh, and in a upscale neighborhood. The property manager went out of her way to make sure everything was provided, including firewood for an outdoor fire pit! It was a great and spacious alternative to a hotel, and a better value.
I stayed at a VRBO so I could bring my pet on a 3 night work trip and this house was my best option! It is a great location, has quite the 1950s decorative taste, and a very comfy queen bed. I didn't do any cooking, but everything you would need is present. The owner even had 2 sampler boxes of tea, creamer and coffee, and eggs from her very own chickens! If it had been warmer the outdoor patio looked swell! Thanks so much!
I love the location of this home, which was convenient for us. The house itself is unique and the whole 50's mid-century modern was very cool. The down side is the home needs a bit of upkeeping/touch-ups throughout. Everything was in working order, yet some updates to furniture would make this place a 5 star. Also a big plus was being pet friendly. Ellen was very pleasant and immediately available.
Overall, I cannot recommend the property highly enough. Everything as described, and more. We had eggs, bacon, pancake mix and coffee fixin's provided. The TV with ROKU allowed us to watch anything we wanted when we were there. Indoor and outdoor spaces were thoughtfully appointed, and the location could not be beaten: quiet neighborhood but absolutely close to everything. There was tons of info about the area provided. This is a MUST STAY with a great host/steward of the historic house and certified natural habitat surrounding it.
I absolutely loved this property. Mid-century is my favorite architectual style, and having this beautiful and authentic home to enjoy was a wonderful experience. The surroundings were magical. Watching baby bunnies, birds, and chipmunks happily play in the protected area that surrounds the home was a perfect way to enjoy the floor to cealing windows. Learning the history of how the home was conceptualized and who designed it made the stay even more special. The home has a lot of original features, but that is part of the charm. The neighborhood offered many more mid-century homes and lovely streets to get lost in while enjoying the trees. Would stay here again.
I had two dogs with appointments at NCS veterinarian school. The host accepts two dogs of any size or weight without an extra charge. This is almost impossible to find a rental that accepts two dogs of any weight. The host was so helpful when one of my dogs got sick while staying there. I don’t know what I would have done without her kindness and support. I total agree with her comment to me that her rental is the “Ronald McDonald house” of NCS vet school.
