This increasingly popular Eastern European nation has vast forested nature reserves as well as cities with UNESCO-listed quarters filled with medieval buildings.

Located in the Baltic region of Northern Europe, Estonia was once overlooked by visitors to Europe. Travelers these days, however, are increasingly being drawn to its intriguing culture, architecture and scenery. Stroll along medieval streets, visit modern museums to learn about Estonia’s contribution to the sciences and hike amid the stunning, near untouched countryside.

Start in the northern part of the country with Estonia’s capital and largest city, Tallinn. Here, Baroque palaces sit next to medieval spires and modern skyscrapers, creating a diverse architectural cityscape. Watch street performers on Town Hall Square and wander around the Estonian Open-Air Museum to see historic buildings, including windmills and farmhouses. Among the city’s standout attractions is Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, an ornate bulbous-domed structure with glittering golden accents and intricately designed archways.

Mingle with the friendly locals in Tartu, a southeastern city with a sizeable student population. Wander the grounds of Tartu University and people-watch in the local square. If you have children in tow, consider taking them to the AHHAA Science Centre, which features interactive exhibits on science and innovation.

For an escape to the countryside, venture to northeastern Estonia to the Lahemaa National Park, which encompasses forests, rivers and coastline. Hike through rural villages, pausing to taste authentic Estonian cuisine in rustic restaurants. If the weather turns, take the opportunity to spend a day indoors at museums, such as the Viinistu Art Museum, which provides a fascinating insight into the history of Estonian art.

Most visitors to Estonia start in Tallinn by flying to the international airport or sailing into Tallinn’s harbor. Take a bus or taxi to the center of the city. To get around Estonia, rent a car or use the national bus network, which runs efficient links to the major cities and regional hubs.

Estonia enjoys the best weather from May to September. July and August are particularly popular months for outdoor festivals.

Come to Estonia to discover enchanting urban architecture from centuries past and to roam in the undeveloped and uncrowded countryside.
