Really nice hotel. Even though the rooms are old, they are kept so nice and clean. The hotel is within walkable distance of many things in union square. Public transportation is also nearby so getting around the city is easy.

Great rooms. Perfect location. Beautiful hotel overall. Wish we had more time at the property. We'd love to stay again.

The hotel has a unique style and peaceful atmosphere.

In an attempt to make the hotel more popular, it seems the owners re-designed the exterior, the attached shops (Zephyr Walk) and the lobby to make it cool and modern, without maintaining the rooms at all. There is a surprise resort fee, which apparently can range from $30 a night to $45 a night - to cover “amenities”. I’ve stayed at, at least a half dozen other hotels that don’t charge $35 a night per room to light a couple fire pits. Just work it into the room price and stop surprising people. As soon as we checked in, we grabbed our bags and headed to our room, only to immediately get kicked out by housekeeping. They were in our room and just kept saying “just a minute” while we stood in the hallway with our luggage. Considering the hotel also does not allow you to use the bathroom in the lobby until you check in, and we had just driven for 3 hours, we were very uncomfortable. There were strange outlets cut into the side of the nightstand that didn’t seem safe.

Breakfast was great, the hotel is beautiful, the rooms are large with comfortable beds and well functioning and relatively quiet A/C. One of few times I've stayed in a hotel that was quiet from above and from the hallway.

The building itself is truly impressive, with a sense of history and grandeur that makes a strong first impression. The location is also excellent, very convenient for exploring San Francisco. That said, some areas of the hotel feel dated. The hallways in particular look old and have a harsh white lighting that feels more like a hospital than a luxury property. The rooms have high ceilings and a good size, which is a plus, but the bathrooms are relatively small. The white lighting in the rooms also creates a very cold ambiance, which takes away from the overall comfort. In general, much of the furniture throughout the hotel could benefit from a renovation. Overall, it’s a beautiful historic property in a great location. With some thoughtful modernization that respects and blends with the hotel’s classic character, it could truly be exceptional.

The staff and friendly and the location feels safe Unfortunately the hotel has seen better days - the rooms are worn, dusty and there is no sound proofing - not the elevated experience I was hoping for
