"My husband and I checked out of Toshimaya last week, and it was one of the most incredible experiences we’ve ever had. We had decided to take a break from our Tokyo honeymoon by visiting a more rural area in the mountains, and I was blessed to stumble across Toshimaya. The inn and surrounding area is even more beautiful than photos can convey. Once taking the bus from Nakanojo Station up to Shima Onsen (the trip was much easier than I’d initially anticipated), we walked in and were greeted by the staff. An amazing employee named Yuki introduced us to the inn and went over the basics before she showed us to our room. Yuki is an asset to the team, and she made us feel welcome and at home! We stayed in the Tsuwabuki room due to our need for a private onsen. We have tattoos! The onsen was magnificent, but I especially loved the treeline view as you soak in the hot water. Meals were locally sourced as far as we could tell, and we tried some foods we wouldn’t have normally had the guts to order, like sakura niku. It was fresh and delicious! Breakfast was laid out each morning around 8am, and just as elaborate as dinner! The river that rushes underneath never ceases, and lulls your warm, yukata-wrapped body to sleep as you lie on a comfy futon, after your amazing kaiseki meal. For smokers, the tiny smoking room was very pleasant, continuously kept clean, and located in the lobby. I also want to thank Toshimaya for their kind anniversary gift and their thoughtfulness."

"We went to the hotel without much expectation. There were three hot spring which you can use privately for an hour, but it was off season so we were very lucky. It was old and cozy we loved staying there."

"This was amazing onsen beside the Yubatake (which is right in front on the hotel) so you are in the middle of the town they have Yukata you can borrow and take wear to walk and take pictures outside too. Breakfast and dinner had a lot of options and was really good. Make sure to Book Hal-Board, it is worth it! They have onsen eggs for breakfast too! The only downside is that it is a bit old and the walls are thin so can be noisy when people talk on the hallway but Overall this was an amazing hotel and will come back again!"

"Staying at Shima Onsen was a real delight. I would highlight the incredibly friendly and gracious staff, who made me feel very welcome and looked after as a solo traveller, and made the beautiful dining experience even better. I enjoyed walking through the lovely nearby streets and forests - it felt very secluded and tranquil. And there was nothing better than coming back from a big walk to relax into one of the onsen - either public or private, depending on what you preferred. I wish I had more time to stay, but even two nights was enough to feel very rejuvenated."
