View modern and classic art collections, browse the shops and admire the innovative designs in this art complex with over 70 attractions and facilities.

Visit the MuseumsQuartier (MQ) and enjoy the striking contrast between the classical Baroque buildings and daring modern streetscape that coexist in this art complex. Spend a morning browsing one of the country’s finest collections of classical art or see works by modern greats such as Picasso and Andy Warhol. Once you’ve visited some of the galleries, relax on abstract benches or have coffee in one of the many fashionable cafés or restaurants.

The MuseumsQuartier opened in 2001. It is one of the largest cultural centers in the world. Located on the former stable grounds of the Imperial Palace, the 645,000-square foot (60,000-square meter) space is home to over 70 different attractions and facilities. These include some of Vienna’s best museums, an architectural center, a dance center and several shops.

If you appreciate classical art, head to the Leopold Museum. This contains works by several of Austria’s most revered Art Nouveau and Expressionist painters, and boasts the world’s largest collection of pieces by Schiele. In stark contrast to this is the MUMOK (Museum of Modern Art). Within its striking gray basalt walls you’ll find pieces by modern greats such as Andy Warhol and Picasso. The design of the Kunsthalle (Art Gallery) is as impressive as the works within. If you have an interest in building design, pay a visit to the Architecture Center with its wealth of information and inspiration.

A huge courtyard makes up the center of the complex. After your museum visits, take a seat on one of the large, colorful and movable polystyrene shapes or stop for coffee. This popular hub is the venue for many of Vienna’s biggest cultural events. Literature and film festivals along with street performances by musicians, DJs and actors ensure there is always something to see and hear in the summer.

MuseumsQuartier is located near the Imperial Palace on the border of Vienna’s old town. You can walk there from the city center or take public transportation. The passageways and the square are public areas, but its museums have varying opening hours and admission prices.
