"Kastel 1700 forms part of the waterfront perimeter of Split's Old Town, which has evolved over many centuries within the envelope of Roman Emperor Diocletian's Palace. It is a small part of an immense historic site. As such, constructing the hotel was strictly controlled and constrained. The advantage is you get to stay not just near an ancient site but actually within it. The disadvantage is that the historic structure inevitable means some compromises. The first is the long, steep stone steps that lead to the entrance. Next, the steps up to your room. And, in the case of our room, a tight fit in the bathroom and an uneven floor, with thoughtful led lighting in the step to help avoid tripping. As long as you are physically able to manage the steps and tight spaces, and realize that this is an historic property and not an obvious location for a modern hotel, Kastel 1700 has a lot to offer. The staff are ever helpful and available, and the location is between the "Riva" waterfront and the historic center. Everything is at your doorstep. Also, the owners have gone to great lengths to provide modern conveniences and decorative flourishes to the rooms and common areas. Wherever you look, you see the love and care that has been poured into creating a unique experience for guests. If you are coming by car, the hotel offers private parking outside the Old Town. It is about 800m from the hotel, on a hill, and a difficult walk with luggage. Use public parking to transfer luggage."

"The over management of the elevators ie not allowing a guest to go to a floor other than their own was bizarre and over the top. Incredible breakfast buffet. Coffee so so. The rooms with the balcony view were nice. Wall thin as we could hear our Neighbors. Hallways a bit claustrophobic w very low ceiling. For serious lap swimmers, the largest pool over seen at a hotel ( 30 m). Access to the sea. Front desk staff pleasant. We were there in late April to before the summer crowds."

"My wife and I stayed at this apartment for our wedding anniversary and it’s a great location. We were met by our host Tony, who was most accommodating and helpful and we were made to feel at home. The bed was comfortable and the towels were changed every other day, we stayed for five days. This self catering apartment has a terrace where you can chill out and relax. Also, there is a separate shower, which enabled us to freshen up before our late flight home. Shops, restaurants and the bus stop are located nearby. You can walk to the Old Town, which is approximately one mile away. We recommend definitely this property for your stay."
