During the 18th century there was a tradition, that on the first Friday in July, a large number of East Enders would travel to Fairlop to eat a meal of bacon and beans beneath as well as partake in general celebrations beneath an ancient oak tree. By the 1750s it was estimated that over 100,000 people could be expected to attend. The original oak blew down in 1820 and the celebration declined, perhaps as a result of licensing laws. The New Fairlop Oak was planted in 1951 and sits in the middle of Fullwell Cross roundabout. The building behind is the Fullwell Cross library. Nearest station: Fairlop.
