Highly recommend! The inn is very cozy and clean and the room we got was very spacious. It is in close proximity to a subway station and bus stop, making commutes via public transit convenient. The staff were also lovely and extremely helpful! We would definitely stay again if we go back to Kyoto!!
The hotel host Thomas is very hospitable. He was gracious in adding my daughter to the stay last min without any additional cost. He also helped me to arrange for a taxi. Overall, it is just a wonderful experience staying at this quiet neighborhood.

Liked: Cleanliness, staff & service
We have booked a triple room with private terrace. To start with positives, it is located conveniently to trains and buses. There were a lot of dining options with good prices, as it is located next to university. The staff was nice and welcoming. It meatched the description in terms of amenities.
On the other hand, with the room itself we were not happy at all. The bathroom was built in to the room, meaning it was quite small and there was a big enough gap between the door and the floor, which meant no privacy. The private terrace led directly to an alley and to a private terrace of another room. The street was quiet and we had no issues but it should be mentioned in the description of the room. We ended up not using it anyway, at it was not cozy or had any view. The room also had quite harsh lighting and there was almost none sound isolation to the other guests. To add, there were almost no storage facilities where you could unpack your luggage. When we checked in and saw the room, we seriously considered to change hotels straight away but it would have been quite pricey, considering it was last minute plus we would have lost the money for the original room. All in all, we strongly advise to avoid this hotel (or possibly this ground floor room, as it seems a lot of people are quite happy according to reviews)…
Very clean property with an attentive staff. Location was great with easy access via walking or bus to many of Kyoto's great attractions. Only issue came with an addition cleaning fee and tax that was assessed. Manager was open to negotiation on this issue, as we were only warned about the tax on Travelocity.
The place was tasteful and had everything I needed. In particular there was a microwave oven in the room which I really appreciated. The hosts were super-nice. One the best places I have stayed in Japan over the past 30 years
This is a very small inn and apparently we stayed in their biggest room. I loved our stay at Marikoji. The hosts are amazing and speak English very well. They have been very helpful with answers to our questions.
I loved the access to the small and private zen garden.
The room layout is a little unusual for North America, but from my narrow experience quite common for Japan.
After staying in an apartment in Tokyo, staying in a traditional Japanese inn but with all the comfort has been an amazing experience.
My wife and I spent 3 nights at the Marikoji Inn and had a wonderful stay!
Check-in - Quick and easy.
The Room - We booked the Kinkakuji suite, which was set up for 4 people since that was the default with the website we booked, but the owner quickly put away the extra beddings. This room was more than enough space for the 2 of us and could comfortably fit 4. The room was quiet and clean with plenty of toiletries and towels. The zen garden was peaceful and soothing. The inn only has a few rooms and the walls are thin, which makes for a quiet and respectful environment. The shower pressure in our room was a little soft as compared to our norm, but this led us to draw hot baths, which is actually much more relaxing!
Location - The owner gave us a local map of nearby shops and restaurants. It's a short walk to the train station and bus stops that will get you anywhere you need to be. Walking distance to plenty of good food and shops, and a few temples/shrines.
Service - Outstanding! The owners went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable and give us ideas of what to eat and where to go. My wife mentioned that she wanted to get her hair cut and the owner was kind enough to walk with us to a local salon to introduce us to the stylist and interpret the details of the haircut. We also mentioned that we were interested in visiting shrines and temples to collect omamori (amulets) and she suggested some nearby shrines and temples that we could visit.
