Nature reserves and hilltop lookouts, historic architecture and a lively arts scene make this an interesting destination in the southeast of San Francisco Bay.

Picturesque Fremont combines a long history with outdoor recreation and a thriving arts scene. The city sits on the southeast banks of San Francisco Bay. Since its foundation in the late 18th century, Fremont has been a culturally diverse city and visitors can often hear locals conversing in many different languages.

Glimpse into Fremont’s early history at Mission San Jose. Founded in 1797, it is home to one of California’s oldest-surviving monasteries. See displays of colonial-era artifacts and look for the graves of notable Spanish settlers in the mission’s cemetery. Learn about Californian lifestyle in the 1840s at the Fremont Museum of Local History. Watch demonstrations of Victorian-era farming activities at the Ardenwood Historic Farm, a working farm established in the 19th century.

Visit Fremont Central Park, home to sports fields, a children’s playground and the breathtaking Lake Elizabeth. Relax with your family at the designated picnic areas, rent a paddle boat to explore the lake or follow a walking trail. The waterslides and pools at nearby Aqua Adventure Water Park are ideal for a day of family entertainment.

If you are feeling energetic then walk or bike the 12-mile (19-kilometer) long Alameda Creek Trail. The sign-posted track winds along the banks of Alameda Creek, from Fremont’s east hills to San Francisco Bay. Go to Mission Peak for more challenging hikes, paragliding tours and to enjoy views of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Don’t miss the chance to visit the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge. Walk along nature trails to viewpoints. Bring a pair of binoculars to spot some of the more than 200 bird species.

Fremont’s multicultural population is showcased in its cultural events and culinary scene. Find Afghani, Indian and Japanese restaurants, among others. Browse the stalls of over 700 food, drink and artisan vendors during August’s Fremont Festival of the Arts.

Fremont is within easy reach of Oakland, San Jose and San Francisco’s international airports. Inner-city public transport is limited so it is worth renting a car to get around. Enjoy the natural beauty of the San Francisco Bay onboard the Niles Canyon Railway, which runs between Fremont and Sunol.
