Rising over the highest hill in San Martino, this iconic memorial tower offers picturesque views overlooking the town.

The Tower of St. Martin commemorates a dramatic battle between the Italians and Austrians, which took place in the 19th century. Explore the site to find a modest museum dedicated to the battle, as well as a chapel and ossuary. In addition to housing historic art and artifacts, the tower is a popular lookout point over the surrounding countryside.

The Battle of San Martino and Solferino occurred during the Second Italian War of Independence in 1859. The French and Italian armies ultimately defeated the Austrians, but both sides suffered significant causalities. The battle incited the unification of Italy, as well as the creation of the country’s Red Cross. The tower was erected in 1883 in honor of King Vittorio Emanuele II and all those who fought for Italian independence.

As you step inside the 39.7-foot (64-meter) tall tower, you’ll see busts of famous Italian figures, including King Vittorio Emanuele II and Giuseppe Garibaldi. Follow the long staircase to the top of the tower and admire the images that depict key moments in the Resurgence.

Be sure to see the views from the top of the tower, which overlooks the field where the battle took place. Admire  the vineyards below, as well as Sirmione and Lake Garda in the distance.

Don’t miss the small museum, which was established in 1939 and is located just behind the tower. The museum’s three different rooms display weapons, maps, uniforms and other artifacts related to the battle.

Follow the short path leading to the chapel and ossuary, where the bones of more than 2,000 fallen soldiers from both armies are kept. Look for a commemorative stone with a short poem dedicated to the soldiers.

The Tower of St. Martin is located a few kilometers away from Desenzano del Garda. There is an admission fee to enter. If you visit during the evening, you’ll see the tower illuminated with the colors of the Italian flag.
