The location is fabulous- we were in one of the Cangrego units right by the beach & loved it. That being said, our experience with the hotel wasn't 100% positive.
We had arranged for a taxi from the hotel to meet us at the border, but were met first by a scammer, who greeted us by name, so we thought he was the taxi driver. He eventually made clear that he wanted us to pay him $20 per person to "help us through the border". He was a friend of the taxi driver apparently, & they were working together. We refused his help but he still grabbed our bags & disappeared with them across the border, making for a long, tension-filled saga that gave us a bad feeling about the hotel before we had even arrived.
Once we did arrive, there were weird money-saving things:
- only 3 towels were provided for a 4-person reservation, and no toiletries
- there was no top sheet for the second bed (a pull-out for our kids), & the hotel said none was available. At our insistence they eventually found a light cotton blanket.
- housekeping is an additional $20/day, which wasn't made clear in our reservation
- the "coffee provided in room" turned out to be just one packet of coffee for 4 nights, and no coffee maker of any kind (the units at Maritimo el Coco are owned by individuals, so others might have coffee makers).
Also, I should mention that one of the other units was robbed while we were there, & the family ended up spending a long afternoon with the police.
