"We had a text a couple of days before and were able to ask a couple of questions. We were welcomed by Vernon on arrival and shown around the hotel. Vernon was keen to show the girls the dancing and they had a long session the next morning. Breakfast was cereal and we had coffee and tea. The guest house is very clean and tidy and welcoming. "Room was top of hotel overlooking a crumbling slated roof but it was the cheapest option and loud seagulls every morning sitting on the roof. The room was adaquate but bathroom only had tiled floor so shower went everywhere. Staff were good and polite and helpful, breakfast was fine and hot but also minimal varied selection. Parking was atrocious, with only 6 spaces ? at £10 per night because street parking was normally nose to tail, and full for 24 hours. Because I have a blue badge I parked on the double yellow lines one night and found a space 10 cars down the other ones. Close to front with a zig zag path down to beach from hotel front door basically. Fine for the money apart from parking problems."

"The hotel is modern and clean. The air con was not working in our room and beung unable to open the windows, the room was very hot. I was unable to ring reception to report the issue becase the phone in the toom was not working either, so I had to use my mobile to ring in externally. The staff offered to try to re set the aircon from reception but this did not work. Half an hour later and after a further phonecall, a member of staff bought a stand alone fan to the room. A very disappointing experience overall given the very high cost of the room for one night and the resultant delay in being able to go to sleep."

Hotel Du Vin Exeter

10/10 Excellent

"We treated ourselves to a little bit more luxury than we usually would as we were staying in Exeter for two days of motorcycle training. Having ridden down from South Wales, the hotel was a real treat to stay at. The room was clean and well equipped, the staff were friendly and welcoming, and for two motorcycles, parking was no issue at all. The outdoor pool was heated and absolutely wonderful. I love open water swimming, so this was right up my street, with the bonus of a jacuzzi in the enclosed part of the pool. The quilt and pillows were feather, which I'm not a fan of, so I requested non-feather pillows, which were brought to the room within moments. Great service, but the pillows were rubbish. However, I like a firm, substantial pillow, so that's simply a personal choice; I can't fault the hotel for providing what I asked for. The breakfast was excellent, and the choice of whiskies and tequilas in the bar was very good. Having never been to Exeter before, I'd definitely go back. The cathedral is beautiful, the local walks through the historic town are gorgeous, and we found an amazing Moroccan restaurant nearby, El Farida, which, for me as a vegetarian, had a great choice"

Ibis Styles Paignton

"After not staying at this Ibis for 6 months in the hope it would have improved I am sorely disappointed. Prior to check in, I had completed the necessary forms - the staff apparently could not print them, so I had to do a paper copy, whilst I filling this form out a member of staff was running around with a fly zapper, whilst his colleague filmed it whilst laughing. I get to my room, there is bacon on the floor and no complimentary water (which hotels.com list in premium rooms) there was no hairdryer in the room, just an empty bag. I had booked this room for a decent night's sleep after a busy few weeks, so what happens at 3.55am the fire alarm goes off. Who doesnt love being woken at that hour?! I will say the volume of the alarm is impressive, there is zero chance of sleeping through it. So, we all get to go outside in pyjamas, enjoy 4am air and await a fire truck. Obviously, there was no fire, so we are back in 25 minutes later, but of course the noise of hundreds of guests trying to get back into rooms means sleep evaded me for a long time. I woke up so late I could not shower and had a truly terrible day. As this hotel is twinned with the Mercure the biggest issue it faces is staff seem to work at both locations, but don't seem to be trained on both computer systems. If the alarm had not gone off it would have been 4/5 but I visit hotels wanting a good night's sleep. This hotel seems to be beset by emergency services needing to visit."
