"Great welcome to the hotel from the gentleman on reception, very friendly and helpful, even understanding when we over slept our check out time.
Room was very spacious and looked like we were in a new part of the hotel room 51, 51 had a great view over the garden where ducks and ducklings were swimming and playing. The garden to the rear of the property was beautifully kept, and the little bridge over the water and small village make of slate made the garden really standout.
Service at the bar was quick and the bar man was super helpful. Breakfast in the morning was a buffet, so you helped yourself which I prefer. The room was well decorated, and had all the features you would expect in a hotel room. Bathroom looked new and the shower was amazing with a raindrop shower head, bed was comfortable and pillows fresh.
1 thing to mention, don't push the button on the side of the toilet. (You have been warned 😉) Great stay and I would stay there again if travelling to the Lakes. Hotel is about 10 minutes drive from Barrow but far enough out not to hear any excess noise from the number of pubs in the town. Full marks for all. 👍"
"A little honey pot, when people get to know about Gilpin, you will not be able to get a room.
Wonderful food, very help staff.
The only little down point, is there isn’t a cooked breakfast. But, the breakfast which I did have was delicious."
"This was a great stay. Highly highly recommend. Staff was excellent. Room is beautiful in a classic quaint way. Felt like the perfect classic Inn experience. We had dinner there. Food was amazing. Atmosphere was a mixture of locals and travelers. Relaxed and welcoming. Breakfast was served, made to order in the same restaurant and was excellent. Great area. Quiet but close to several things. Walking trail across the street allowed us some activity after dinner to a beautiful view if the valley and town. We only wished we had booked it for longer. It was our favorite stay of our 2 week trip. Of note, you check in at the bar. There's an entrance around back or in the front. Just know, there's not a separate check in and you're in the right place."
"Very small accommodation for a family of three. Pics online do not adequately represent the ‘stables’ but mainly show the other units which are bigger. For the price we paid (£102.50 for the night) I would say it’s massively over priced. Total accommodation was probably half the size of an Ibis budget room but double the price. Beds were comfortable and location was good. Outside area could have been tidier and again not suitably represented in the pics . Also directly next to a busy railway track ."
"Stayed here on a Saturday night and on first impressions of the reception and bar/dining/ terraced area, it looked as if the hotel had been given a bit of an uplift, the outside was in keeping with the era with the local buildings and ones dating back to 1900s.
The pool etc and gym were good and enjoyed them.
What wasn’t good was the state of the room, which was in a god awful state of repair, with evidence in insect damaged carpet, lack of painting for a number of years, wood facias all scuffed and chipped, the shower screen having no rubber strip to prevent water dropping onto the floor.
The last part caused water to pour onto the bathroom floor and caused us to get extra towels to shower with as we soaked everything up that had leaked out.
The furniture and fitting in bathroom were very dated too.
I would have asked for a different room but the hotel was fully booked for the night.
The bedding and cleanliness of the room was ok and the only reason we stayed there.
I would say at £135 for one night with no breakfast, was grossly overpriced, by aporox £70, given the appalling state of the room.
I wouldn’t recommend the hotel to anyone, especially at its grossly inflated price and would only consider going back if the whole interior of every room was upgraded.
The interior made a Travelodge room look like a palace.
Bitterly disappointed to say the least!
0 ⭐️ for bedroom and 3⭐️ for everything else!"
"Staff went above and beyond accommodating us arriving in the middle of the night. Thank you very much!! Beautiful premises, lovely and clean. Great freshly cooked home cooked food. And gorgeous ales!! We will be back"
"I have stayed at the hotel on a number of occasions and do so because I have confidence that it will be clean and well maintained. This is in contrast to a number of occasions where I have experienced disappointment when staying at other hotels.
The general amenity of the Gateway is extremely pleasant and the staff have managed a relaxing and comfortable public area."
Castle Green Hotel In Kendal, BW Premier Collection
6/10 Okay
"This property seems dated and very plain. No staff to assist with luggage. Only one restaurant was open and the food seemed overpriced. The fire alarm went off twice in the middle of night requiring room evacuation to standing outside of the hotel. 30 minutes after getting back into the room, the alarm goes off again. Breakfast was basic, --the standard, eggs, bacon, sausage, beans, black pudding, but only one type of yogurt, little fresh fruit,"
