Haedong Yonggung Temple

A colorful and artistic Buddhist temple complex, this religious site stands atop a rocky cliff where you can see spectacular sea views.

Haedong Yonggung Temple (Haedong Yonggungsa) is an architectural and artistic delight. Wander between its collection of sanctums, shrines and temples. See a fascinating display of statues and sculptures and enjoy uninterrupted ocean views.

Haedong Yonggung Temple dates back to 1376, when it was established during the Goryeo Dynasty by a Buddhist master called Naong. Its seafront location is uncommon in that most of South Korea’s temples are set amid mountains. Much of the temple fell into ruins during the Japanese colonial period and it was later rebuilt in 1970. It is one of three revered sites connected to the Goddess Buddha of Korea.

As you approach the temple, note the row of human-sized stone sculptures outside the entrance. They represent the animals from the Chinese zodiac. Adjacent to the sculptures is a multitier pagoda dedicated to road safety. Visitors can pray for safe road travel here. Staircases and walkways then lead you throughout the temple and to its main points of interest.

Note the lanterns that line the stairway with 108 steps. Admire the Buddhist statues, colorful paper lanterns and dragon carvings that decorate the main sanctuary. Look for a three-level pagoda adorned with four lions, which symbolize anger, happiness, joy and sadness. Other notable features include a huge dragon sculpture and a statue of the Seawater Great Goddess Buddha.

In front of the main shrine is a courtyard that presents views of the ocean and craggy cliff face. You can also appreciate the scenery by walking onto the rocks north of the complex. Wake up early and come to watch the beautiful sunrise. Crowds flock here on New Year’s Day to watch the year’s first daybreak.

Find the temple in the Gijang area of Busan. Public buses travel from the Haeundae metro station and stop a short walk away. Parking is available for a fee.

Haedong Yonggung Temple is open daily, from early in the morning until sundown. Admission is free. Spring is a busy period, as this is when the temple hosts festivities for the birthday of Buddha.
