Fernando de Noronha

Travel Guide
Conceicao Beach featuring a beach, general coastal views and a sunset
See clifftop forts and rock formations silhouetted by the sunset. Swim alongside colorful marine creatures in the ocean.

Some of the world’s most pristine and picturesque beaches decorate the shores of the Fernando de Noronha archipelago. Glorious rock formations rise from the ocean, dense forests sweep across the rolling terrain and exotic animals inhabit these tropical islands. Learn about the region’s military history with trips to clifftop fortification ruins, including Remédios Fort and Santo Antonio Fort Ruins.

Most of the attractions and amenities are on the largest island, which contains the village of Vila dos Remédios. See the church of colonial design and the cannons and monument surrounding São Miguel Palace. Swim in the natural rock pool of the village’s Cachorro Beach.

Take a diving excursion from Santo Antonio Port, northeast of the city. See the Santo Antonio Fort Ruins and the elegant São Pedro Chapel that offer spectacular views of the harbor and beach. Explore the nearby Shark Museum.

On the other side of Vila dos Remédios lie tropical bays, including Conceição Beach, Porcos Bay, Sancho Beach and Boldro Beach. Look up to admire the iconic Dois Irmãos Hill from these beaches.

The preservation of sea turtles is ongoing at the Tamar Project. Attend lectures and browse exhibits in the visitor center to learn about the majestic animals’ plight. Visit the quiet and secluded Sueste Beach on the southern coast for the possibility of feeding the sea turtles and swimming alongside them.

The set of islands takes its name from a merchant who received it as compensation for the service of providing brazilwood. The main island is off the northeastern coast of Brazil, with Natal the nearest major city. There is an environmental fee charged upon arrival via air or boat. Cruises operate from Fortaleza, Natal and Recife with flights from the latter two. Rent a car or buggy to get around the island or use bus services.

With its sea turtle project, scenic bays and fort ruins, Fernando de Noronha is a natural wonder with an intriguing slice of history.

The views is the only thing you go for. Not much of a night life or a whole lot of things to do when it gets dark. 3 to 4 days is plenty. Anything more then that and you’ll want to swim your way back to Recife.

Our primary reason for going to FdN was to dive. We enjoyed an excellent dive experience with Atlantis Divers and our dive masters Rafael and Giro.
