Dogo Giyaman Glass Museum

Dogo Giyaman Glass Museum
The Meiji and Taisho periods come to life through the translucent antiques in this museum. See how glass cutting can inspire the most unlikely themes.

The Dōgo Giyaman Glass Museum comprises a captivating collection of hundreds of glass works of art. It provides an insight into the art of glass cutting, while showcasing a variety of delicate, colorful and translucent pieces. Arrive in this glassy realm and marvel at the collection of clear, sparkling material adorning the shelves.

Enter the Yamanote Garden Palace, which also has a pond and a bridal chapel, and head downstairs for the museum. You’ll be greeted by a range of intense, swirling colors reminiscent of a lava lamp, in addition to milky opaque features and elegant, practical pieces. Consider the unlikely uses for glass in the examples of a bird cage and tobacco pipes, among other items. You’ll even find a pillow made of glass in this otherworldly exhibit.

Admire more everyday objects, including the expertly crafted bowls and cups made from glass. Beside these are glass animals, while another display sheds light on the glassy parts used in the construction of the nearby Dōgo Onsen Main Building. Trace the history of glass cutting by checking out the different styles during the Taisho, Edo and Meiji eras. Snap photos of your favorites artworks across the museum.

Back upstairs, enjoy snacks and refreshments in the site’s café. Wander through the garden of European design, inspect the various glass sculptures and waterfalls and take in the views of the large and scenic pond. With luck, you might see a traditional wedding ceremony in the chapel.

There is a fee for entrance to the museum, with discounts for kids. The site opens Thursday through Tuesday from morning until night.

The Dōgo Giyaman Glass Museum is in the northeastern part of Matsuyama. Take the tram to the eastern terminal of Dōgo Onsen and walk north for less than 10 minutes to reach it. While in the district, visit neighboring sights such as the Dōgo Onsen Main Building, the Botchan Karakuri Clock and the Matsuyama Shrine.
