Now almost 200 years old, Neptunes Staircase is designed to lift or drop boats almost 20 metres in a series of 8 locks taking about 90 mins for the full cycle to take place. It's a small but worthwhile detour whilst travelling through Fort William to see it in operation.
The Scottish canal system is interesting. This series of lochs carries ships from one loch to another.

For a 4 star hotel this was appalling. During our 3 night stay we didn’t see one member of hotel staff. No reception (self checkin & out) room was dirty I had to clean the toilet when we arrived and the cups but there was no one to tell. Rang reception several times no one picks up. Minimal but beautifully decorated and large room with great view. Continental breakfast included which we greatly appreciated. Easy check in and checkout process. They even thought of earplugs if you need it. One of my stays in Scotland so far. Truly felt like home away from home.

We enjoyed our 2 nights here. Great to have free parking and a washing machine. We also cooked and liked the fully stocked kitchen. The beds were comfortable and the water hot. We enjoyed the living room and could spread out.

Took this trip in late November, when days are rainy, gloomy, and short, but the experience was one of a kind. Strolling through the forest I was amazed at how green everything was, all covered in moss and ferns, almost like a fairy tale. I would definitely visit it again any time of the year.
