A three meter high tori gate on Sakurajima was completely buried by ash and pumice stone during a volcanic eruption which occurred in 1914. Rediscovered by builders doing excavation work while building a new school, it was left partially buried as a memorial.
Lava flows from the same eruption joined the then island of Sakurajima to Kyushu.
