Une partie du champ de bataille du 6 août 1870. depuis le belvédère érigé par les allemands Au creux de la vallée, le village de Woerth La bataille du 6 août 1870 a eu lieu entre l'armée française (positionnée à Froeschwiller et commandée par Mac-Mahon) et les armées allemandes coalisées autour de la Prusse (positionnées à Woerth). Le nom de Reichshoffen lui a été historiquement associé alors qu'elle ne s'y est pas déroulée. Les soldats allemands étaient trois fois plus nombreux que les français. Cette bataille, qui a fait 20.000 morts dans les deux camps, marque le début de la guerre franco-allemande de 1870-1871 perdue par la France et qui a abouti à l'annexion par l'Allemagne de l'Alsace et de la Lorraine (région de Metz). Les répercussions de cet affrontement ont été considérables car les deux grandes guerres, qui se sont produites au XXè siècle, en sont le prolongement.
