Upstairs Hobbit House - Not Really Habitable
It is clear that the owners spent a lot of money fixing up the "cottage" to make it a rental. The mini-splits on both levels work very well. The downstairs is comfortable and well -designed, and the kitchen is functional. The owner communicated well throughout our stay. The description says that the "upstairs loft style has a short ceiling," but that wins the understatement of the year award. The upstairs is basically an attic that has been converted into "bedroom" space. The ceilings are absurdly low. They are A-frame ceilings with a small central row and angled sides. The ceiling in the area with the day bed is 5' 10" at its highest, central point, and the ceiling slopes at an angle downward from there. The walkway into the bedroom area was even lower. You have to bend down to walk through to the bedroom. The A-frame ceiling in the bedroom was lower than the outer room. My wife is 5'7", and she couldn't stand up in the bedroom. I couldn't sit on the side of the bed without hitting my head on the sloped part of the ceiling. To get up off the bed, you had to move to the middle and slide forward so as not to hit your head against the sloping ceiling. There is very little circulation to that corner bedroom, so it felt exactly like sleeping in an attic. This rental might work for a family with young kids (under 5 years of age), *if* the parents slept on the sleeper sofa downstairs and the kids slept in the converted attic. Otherwise, this does not work.
