「This is by any definition a magnificent property and it it is so beautiful and so well managed that any criticisms feel like nit picking. The staff cannot do enough, the rooms a lovely and the property itself is unforgettable. The only complaint is that the rooms are exceedingly dark and they would do well to either provide higher wattage bulbs or install reading lights on the beds. 」

「A lovely family run hotel with attention to detail and great service. Great location, with a super pool (great for kids). Beautiful views across the hillsides. Breakfast was delicious and very fresh. Friday night BBQ and live music was a lovely experience. We visited a local Thai restaurant on Friday evening, as recommended by the hotel - they weren’t wrong. It was really tasty and the service excellent. All in all would highly recommend and would love to return to Hotel L’Abbaye!」

「We loved this beautiful guesthouse and our gracious, welcoming hosts. Nelly’s jams and Franck’s yogurt were a delight at breakfast. If you are staying in Sarlat, try to stay here. 「The Maison de Tari is a perfect place to stay for families looking to explore the area around Sarlat. We stayed in a family room with three small children and it suited us perfectly. All rooms had a separate outside sitting area with a large table. It had a good sized pool, a separate communal cooking and dining area, including a gas BBQ and a fridge. A great continental breakfast was provided that included fresh pastries from the local bakery, and a selection of local jams, cheeses and meats....

「The property is in a great location. It’s clean, safe and quiet and has air conditioning. It is located in old town and just steps from the Central Square. The owners were great to work with. We had a room refresh in our extended. Stay in the cleaners. Did a great job. We also extended our stay last minute and they were able to rearrange rooms so we didn’t have to move. We would definitely recommend this property.. 」

This will ever be known as the chateau of Josephine Baker. She had been a singer of international renown with an extraordinary career. Born in the States in 1906, she emigrated to France and became a citizen in 1937 when she married a Jew, but not before knowing the street life in America where she’d had to sleep in cardboard shelters and scavenge in garbage bins. For ten years she was the lead in the Folies Bergeres, and admired by all who saw her. Shirley Bassey once said, “I swear in all my life I have never seen, and probably never shall see again, such a spectacular singer and performer." During WWII She won the Croix de Guerre for her work with the French Resistance. When the Germans invaded France she moved to the chateau where she helped Belgian refugees and ultimately adopted 12 children. She was the first Afro-American to star in a major motion picture (Zouzou) and was the only female speaker in the civil rights march to Washington with Martin Luther King and was offered the lead in the movement when he was assassinated but she declined. When the builders refurbishing the chateau sent her almost broke, Grace Kelly, a close friend, offered her accommodation on the Riviera.
