Marvel at some of Bolivia’s most awe-inspiring sights in this town surrounded by the country’s renowned salt-lined deserts of otherworldly beauty.

Brave the cold winds and inhospitable wilderness of highland Bolivia to experience the spectacular natural wonders of Uyuni. This town is a gateway to the nation’s famous, breathtaking salt flats. Linger in the town for a warm welcome from the locals and to see some curious, lesser-known attractions.

Start your exploration of Uyuni in the Train CemeteryOpens in a new window, a striking feature that recalls the town’s trading past. As train networks were planned and then abandoned in the area, all the locomotives were left here. Walk among the rusted shells of historic engines, each left hollow by the salt winds of the region.

Marvel at the stark, dazzling white terrain of Salar de UyuniOpens in a new window, the world’s biggest salt flats. This mesmerizing, alien landscape spreads out for 4,000 square miles (10,360 square kilometers) outside the town. Watch as the rainfall rests on the flats, creating a reflective surface on the plains.

Explore a salt hotel or even stay in one of them. Join a tour from the town of Uyuni to witness the salt flats and its unique sights.

To see other ways that Bolivians use these minerals, visit the town of Colchani. Learn how the material on the ground becomes a table condiment in the salt factory. Buy souvenirs carved from salt.

Back in the town of Uyuni, learn about the history of its people in the Archaeology and Anthropology Museum of the Southern Andes. See ceramics, textiles and other artifacts from local cultures.

Uyuni is in southwest Bolivia, about 130 miles (210 kilometers) from the city of Potosi, the department capital. Book tickets in advance for a bus from La Paz, Sucre or Potosi to travel into Uyuni. Occasional flights from La Paz and Santa Cruz fly into the small Joya Andina Airport, located directly outside the town.

Visit Uyuni between July and October for the most accommodating climate. Alternatively, come here in the wet season of November through April to see the salt flats take on their mirror-like quality.

"If you’re coming off the salt flats this is the place to stay!!! It is warm and has the most cushy, cosey duvets! There are also electric blankets. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay - the food was also top notch."

Good hotel in Uyuni
"It was great that the shower had plenty of water and hot water. The temperature was low during my stay, but the whole hotel was warm. I needed new towels because I stayed for two nights, but they didn't come. One roll of toilet paper wasn't enough. The staff were friendly."

Frontier post, cute dusty town, reminded us of the Wild Westmivies! Lots of good restaurants, good food. Excellent breakfast in the replacement hotel.

The city of Uyuni itself is a dusty old town that attracts a ton of backpacker tourists who want to visit the salt flats. It's sad that the tourist cars leave rubber tracks all over the salt flats so maybe they can work on making it more sustainable.

2/5 - Disappointing

Uyuni is mostly half built and the roads are unpaved and very dusty.

Visiting the salt flats has been the most magical experience. This hotel was convenient in the way that we did the stargazing tour and its right next to the salt flats so the cars actually have to pass by the hotel so it was convenient for that.

Only the train cemetery and salt lake in Uyuni are nice. The rest of the town is unfortunately pretty run down... but people are very nice.

Uyuni has a wonderful surrounding, with some amazing views. It is the gateway to unique Salar salt desert and to a sand desert with marvellous lagoons, rock formations, scenic volcanoes and exotic fauna. Altitud and poor infra are quite challenging.
