The property is in a great location with 15 minute walk to the beach meaning we could don wetsuits at home and be surfing in no time, with a climb back up the path at the end keeping you warm until you get home again for a warm shower!
The walk does require steady footing and some energy and so is not suitable for older family members. Parking can be a bit of a nightmare in Porthtowan so the answer for us tended to be a drive down to the car park to deposit the “olds”, back up to the house and then walk down to the beach, then the same process in reverse to go home again.
If you are a runner there are some wonderful areas to run, you are literally on the South West Coast Path, but be ready for some serious elevation!
House great and spacious with a BBQ area and a charcoal BBQ outside which we made full use of several times.
Comfortably accommodates 8 holiday makers in 4 separate rooms and the downstairs shower room is also a blessing so older family members do not have to get upstairs to use the upstairs bathroom.
The Victory Inn is about a kilometre from the property and has excellent food - highly recommend the moule mariniere (steamed mussels) which uses cider instead of white wine in its sauce. Fantastic creamy sauce - though extremely rich.
Meanwhile, though we found it far too late, I recommend you check out Etheringtons Farm Shop at Wheal Rose, Scorrier, Redruth. Excellent meats, very helpful and we had an excellent roast of pork from there. Also a fantastic selection of Cornish Gin!
The Owner Dominique is meanwhile very friendly and helpful, plus she is also a former UK surfing champion and also teaches surfing - both our sons were stood up by the end of a 1 hour lesson, though I unfortunately can’t say the same about myself or my wife though it was still great fun trying!
We certainly hope to return to Porthtowan again and would thoroughly recommend you also give it a try!
